HI Emma,

At one point we had to crush all mom's meds and mix it with a spoonful of

applesauce or jam. Maybe she'll take it that way. Maybe some of her meds come

in liquid form and you can give her a quick shot of meds that way.

Taking meds...

Does anyone have any good ways of getting their LO to SWALLOW pills? Grandma

has never

had a problem with this before but the 5 days or so have been a real trial and

it seems to be

getting worse. Even when I cut them up very small (not quite crushed) and put

them in ice

cream she eats the ice cream around them and spits the pills out or rolls them

around her

mouth sucking on them and complaining about how bad it tastes. When I tell her

to swallow

them she says " Quit yelling at me, I KNOW! " She says it doesn't hurt to

swallow and she

doesn't seem to have problems swallowing what little food and drink she's

getting in these

days, its just the pills. I'm worried that she's going to start refusing them

(she tried to just

now and I talked her into trying just one more time). Some I know its ok to

crush (my

understanding is that if it is scored so it can be cut than it is ok to crush

it) but some I'm not

sure. Can namenda or sinimet be crushed? Her EFFEXOR XR comes in gel caps, is

it ok to

open those up and just mix it with ice cream or pudding?

I guess I should call the pharmasist but I thought I'd ask if anyone here knew

first.

Emma,

I don't think you are suppose to open the gel caps. I think the outside is part

of the processing of them.

You might check with the drug store and see what you can get in liquids like

Courage said.

Yes, applesauce was how we were doing it until about a month ago. Then all of a

sudden

Grandma went on applesauce strike and refused to eat it. So we tried different

things and

ice cream came out as the only one she didn't make faces and complain about so

we've

been giving her the pills with that until 5 days ago when she seemed to start

forgetting

how to swallow when pills were involved. Its so weird that its ONLY with pills

too. She

seems to swallow food and drink (what little she accepts anyway) just fine and

now will eat

the ice cream around the pills and spit them out.

its a riddle wrapped in an enigma!!

My husband takes his pills but we sure have a time with them. Some days

worse than others. He thinks (for some reason) that they are supposed to be

in the drink so he is always trying to spit them out once I get them in his

mouth. He does not open his mouth good so that I can get them in his mouth

and then once I get them in, he doesn't swallow the drink. He can drink

fine but holds it all in his mouth and I keep telling him: " swallow,

swallow, swallow. " I tried the applesauce but he just swallows the

applesauce and keeps the pills. He doesn't have only 3 or 4 meds each time

but in the morning, all the vitamins he takes are the extra problems. I

think the sinemet would just dissolve quickly if you can get it in her

mouth.

It is just another fun thing we caregivers have to deal with day after day.

Aren't we having fun yet? Leona

Yeah, it sure is a world full of constant surprises! Almost every morning in

the shower I

start thinking, " Ok, what new weird thing will pop out today?! " I always hope

for the nice

surprises (like the morning Grandma greeted me with " OH HIII!!!!!!! " so excited

to see me

like she hadn't seen me in forever) but more often than not its the confounding

ones that

we get. It sure does get the " thinking outside the box " creative juices going

but its SOOO

frustrating when you can't figure out a way to rework things to fit the new

scenario. Ah

well, tomorrow is a new day...and she probably won't want to swallow the dang

pills then

either! ;-)

I think you may have to go to crushing the oills, if ok for that type

of pill. You can also mix them in pudding. At the nursing home they

use a small amount of applesauce or pussing with the crushed pills

mixed in. Takes 1 big spoonful to get it all. It probably does

taste nasty...maybe followed by a " good " spoon of pudding or

something to drink would be good. Maybe it can be disguised better

in pudding than ice cream?

My Dad eats all pureed food and if there is the smallest

something " foreign " , he will single it out and spit it out. Sounds

familiar.

What a good idea, Patti! I can't believe no one has thought of that. It is the

Emma,

We crush all my Mom's pills in a pill crusher (any drug store has one) and

have always given them to her in applesauce. We never had a problem. I

hope this can work well for you. You can also put them in pudding.

Does anyone have any good ways of getting their LO to SWALLOW pills?

Grandma has never

had a problem with this before but the 5 days or so have been a real trial

and it seems to be

getting worse. Even when I cut them up very small (not quite crushed) and

put them in ice

cream she eats the ice cream around them and spits the pills out or rolls

them around her

mouth sucking on them and complaining about how bad it tastes. When I tell

her to swallow

them she says " Quit yelling at me, I KNOW! " She says it doesn't hurt to

swallow and she

doesn't seem to have problems swallowing what little food and drink she's

getting in these

days, its just the pills. I'm worried that she's going to start refusing

them (she tried to just

now and I talked her into trying just one more time). Some I know its ok

to crush (my

understanding is that if it is scored so it can be cut than it is ok to

crush it) but some I'm not

sure. Can namenda or sinimet be crushed? Her EFFEXOR XR comes in gel

caps, is it ok to

open those up and just mix it with ice cream or pudding?

I guess I should call the pharmasist but I thought I'd ask if anyone here

knew first.
