Hi All

I haven't posted in ages. So much has happened in the last 6 months. I did

something that I said I would never do. We found a house to buy that had the

perfect accommodations to move my mom in with us so we did it. Moved in

October. Took a lot out of me. ( I was a lot younger the last time I moved. )

It is

a lovely big house and mom has her own bedroom living room and bathroom.

Anyway, we figured that we would find that Mom's issues might be worse than

we thought and we would find out what was REALLY going on once we all lived

together. Well we have found out and she is worse than we thought. Eating is a

real problem. I don't know how she exists on what she consumes. Although she

had no problem gobbling up 3 lbs of candy and such in 6 days that people had

given her for Xmas. Bathing and hair washing a real issue too. She is

completely able bodied but refuses to anything, laundry, change her bedding etc

and

won't let me do it either. EVERYTHING is a constant argument. If I back off

from trying to coax her things are somewhat tolerable .....until recently.

In the past week I have been called every name in the book. She bit me. Told

me I was the lowest form of scum on the earth, and accused me of stealing

her non existent things, blah blah blah. I am wondering if she has a UTI because

she is not letting up on this behavior.

Question today is are there two different kinds of tests for a UTI? Seems

like there is the quick one they do in the office and then one they send out to

a lab to be cultured. Is that correct? Is one more accurate than the other?

And which should I have for her?

Thanks for any advice on this.

Hi June

Thanks for your response. Is the home test for UTI available at the pharmacy

or maybe online somewhere?

That would be very handy to have.

Yes! I cut way back on buying her " goodies " months ago before she moved in

with us because as I monitored her groceries I could see that the sweets were

the first to disappear while the other food lay rotting in her fridge. Since

she moved in with us I rarely buy her any goodies. On occasion I use the

goodies that we might have to lure her to eat a real meal. She fixes her own

pitiful " meals " . She seems to have a problem accepting any meals from us. She

eats her " dinner " very early 4-4:30 and we eat much later. On occasion when

she is still up at our dinnertime we invite her to eat with us and after much

protest she will usually chow down. Sometimes I fix her a plate of leftovers

and slide it on to her side of the fridge (in one of her own dishes) so she

will maybe eat some real food the next day.

Very frustrating. I am afraid she will wind up with malnutrition. She is

very resentful about us coaxing her to eat. Its off to Dr next week to discuss

the eating.

Thanks

& Ginny

YOu might try getting one of those home-testing UTI

kits just to get an idea if she does have a UTI. If

it shows positive, then you could take her in and get

it tested and cultured if they found anything.

Lack of motivation, not wanting to bathe, brush teeth,

etc., goes along with the disease, I think. And,

getting them to do some of those things is really

frustrating. Also, the sweet tooth really kicks in.

Is she getting her own meals, or do you provide them

for her. You might have to find a way to dispose of

the sweets so that she will eat better.

Good luck in your endeavor.

You should get both tests run. The first test will tell you that

there's a UTI or not. The MD may or may not prescribe antibiotics on

that basis. The second day will tell you exactly what the bug is and

what specific antibiotics can be used to kill that bug.

I just went to Walgreen's and asked for a UTI homekit. It was very inexpensive

and had 4 strips for 4 tests. It saves a trip to the doctor.

I never used one, but I think you can get them at the

drugstore.

When the NH would serve the food, they often brought

the dessert out first and put it on the table, so

guess what - most of them ate dessert first and then

sometimes didn't want to eat. I never could figure

out why they did that, as they knew most of them were

really sweet eaters. It seems to go with dementia, as

what I have heard is that as taste diminishes, the

sweet taste is the last to go.

She probably won't get too malnourished, and I know

some feel they just let them have what they want.

Hi ,

I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. It's upsetting enough to

watch the disease progress, but it's doubly upsetting to be called names,

etc, etc. when you are doing all you can to help. I feel terrible for you.

It doesn't sound like she has a UTI. In my experience, the behavior

changes to getting more NON-responsive, lethargic. Is she on Aricept or

Exelon and any anti-anxiety medications?
