Guest guest
Hi Emma- Great news. Please keep us informed as to how grandma does on this new med. Hoping life calms a bit for you!! Many hugs- Sandie Des Moines, IA dad, Merle, passed away from LBD 9-20-02, age 65 mum, Jo, (MIL) passed away from LBD 4-29-07, age 78 -- FINALLY! We finally found a doctor who is willing to try Grandma on Provigil! We went to see her GP yesterday about all this not eating business (found out she is down to 104 lbs!! She was 112 last time we were in) and in talking to him about all the other things going on with her we both suggested Provigil at the same time!! It was pretty funny. If we can finally keep her awake during the day it should at least help with a whole host of other problems; restlessness at night, depression, memory, desire to do things, etc. So I gave it to her with her pills this morning and we'll see how it goes... Emma Welcome to LBDcaregivers.
Guest guest
Well it at least looks like the dose of Provigil we have started with isn't enough. Its supposed to be at its most effective within the first 2 hours after you take it...its been 2.5 hours and Grandma is tilted sideways in her chair and snoring loudly and drooling. ;-) We'll go the rest of the week but I'm thinking we'll have to talk to the doc about a stronger dose. She only took 100mg and the doc said it can take up to 400mg for some people. Oh well, we tried, and its a start. Emma > > Hi Emma- > > Great news. Guest guest
I had forwarded this post to to get his thoughts - here's what he said: " 1) It can take a week as sleep patterns get fixed. 2) 100 is pretty modest if someone's floridly symptomatic. We use 200 + 5 mg of dextroamphetamine (amphetamine = fast onset, short duration, provigil = slower than hell, lasts all day). If the action isn't lasting long enough, you increase the Provigil, at the risk of messing with their sleep patterns. The problem isn't that they won't *go* to sleep when they get in bed and put their head down; the problem is they won't necessarily *stay* asleep, because they'll awake refreshed on two hours of sleep. We went back and forth trying to get the " right " dose between the various agents and getting things worn off by bedtime. By moving bedtime back an hour and doing the 5/200 combo pack,, we're pretty solid from 7:30 AM through 9:30 PM. 3) 200mg tablets are cheaper than 2x100 tablets, and they're scored for easy cutting. If you think someone's gonna need 150, get Rxs for 100s and 200s on alternate months so you can mix and match. Guest guest
Thanks (and !)! I had thought it would probably take a little longer for things to sort themselves out but Grandma's GP said we would see SOMETHING right away. Guess I got my hopes up! ;-) Grandma wasn't a whole lot different during the day yesterday but she was restless until about 10pm (usually she's out at 6pm) and then slept through the night after that. So maybe thats the start of some positive changes! MAYBE ;-) Emma > > > > Well it at least looks like the dose of Provigil we have started > with isn't enough. Guest guest
Emma, You sound so much better than before. Those new bras must have had a very uplifting effect. I am interested in what the Provigil does. The Exelon Patch is really getting rave reviews on the site. Millie seems to have taken a dive. She cannot remember where her closet is, doesn't remember how to put her teeth in, and is very uncertain how to work clothing items. Could be temporary, but we have now decided to up the care. She doesn't need anything more than a companion. A former student of mine is willing to work for $10 an hour, six hours a day. If anything worrisome happens, this gal would call me right away. This gal will last til she finds a regular job. I was with her when her gandmother died in the nursing home, so I know she can handle it if she would find Millie dead. (my biggest worry with my 21 year old daughter-in-law, who goes back to school week after next).
