Chamber relocates due to mold

(Updated: Thursday, November 15, 2007 10:28 AM CST) , Madison

Record

The Madison Chamber of Commerce has a new home-temporarily.

The Chamber was forced out of its office in downtown Madison in June of this

year due to mold contamination.

The Chamber's new temporary office is in Madison West Office Park on Lime

Quarry Road, just behind the Burger King on Highway 20. The new office is fully

operational as of Nov. 5.

The Chamber expects to have a brand new office in the new Madison YMCA,

which hopes to break ground next year. The Y is donating an office to the

Chamber, as well as the Volunteer Center of Madison County, said Chamber

Managing

Director Sallie Wagner.

The Chamber staff suffered numerous physical symptoms because of the mold,

Wagner said.

" The staff had high levels of black mold in their systems, " she said. " We

have to be flown to Dallas for treatment. "

After the discovery of the toxic mold, a company was hired to clean the

building by the city, which owns it. The Chamber leased the property from the

city.

The company, Envirosafe, came in and cleaned the ductwork, replaced the A/C

units and cleaned the floors in July, Wagner said. When a toxicologist came

back after cleaning and discovered there was still black mold there, the

Chamber board decided it was time to relocate.

Madison Mayor Sandy Kirkindall said that after cleaning, the building is OK.

" The mold remediation has been completed, and the building is ready for

occupancy, " he said.

Kirkindall added that no decision has been made as to what to do with the

property now that the Chamber has moved out.

" I personally would like to see a business in there that would generate

sales tax revenue for the City, " he said.

The Chamber had to operate without its office from June to November of 2007.

As many operations as possible were performed from home, Wagner said. Office

hours at the new Lime Quarry Road facility are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday

through Friday.
