Beware........more moldy hotel rooms

I stayed in hotel for second time for a few weeks due to house problem

and I had same problem I had last fall, with air conditioner leaking

RIGHT ONTO FLOOR and going unnoticed.

End of last summer I stayed at what looked and smelled like nice, clean

hotel only to find when walking barefoot one day that carpet near air

conditioner was COMPLETELY wet, not damp, but wet. I called

maintenance. They offered me another room. We went around and looked

at other rooms and all of them had wet carpet near air conditioner.

YOU COULD NOT SEE IT. The carpet did not look wet. If you had shoes

on, you would never know this!!!

Since they all were wet, apologized and brought wood 2 by 4 into room

and cut pieces to jake up air conditioner so it would drain OUTSIDE

like it should. I covered it up and didn't use it. They blotted up

carpet.

Then THIS late summer I also needed to get out of house and went to

hotel closer by, negiotiation a lower rate for longer stay. I asked

them to clean air conditioner filter out and owner who was there said I

wouldn't find any mold HERE...this place is just a year old. I knew it

could be moldy by then but did sound good. Anyway, near the end of my

stay, sitting at desk writing something at a time I am usually gone by,

I hear a trickle of water running. I look around and find water

RUNNING out of air conditioner, not DRIPPING, but running. So I ran

and got cup from bathroom to catch it. I emptied it 6 TIMES before

maintenance got there and put a pan under it, and then there was more

water pan caught. I hadn't even been using air conditioner at all. It

wasn't hot out. Had used heater only. Carpet was WET around air

conditioner, just like other place. I could not tell AGAIN by looking

at it. Carpet was black with flecks of other colors and dark pattern

and no wet area of carpet DID NOT look any different than rest of

carpet.

They offered me another room but I said I was about to leave, which was

the truth, plus I figured from prior experience this room was probably

no different than any other room anyway.

So, WATCH OUT FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!

I DID go down on hands and knees and feel around carpet when I got room

but it wasn't WET but did seem as if it could be DAMP, but really

couldn't tell if it was damp or just COOL. Damp carpet feels cool but

perhaps taking some paper towel or toilet paper I should have pressed

it up against carpet around air conditioner and other locations too as

it might 'pubble' elsewhere where floor may not be level........Oh,

JEEZ!!!! Keeping this info out of the public knowledge is sooooo

dangerous. They weren't concerned at all, just that I might want

another room without wet carpet!!!!!

This has become such a common problems in hotels that now I ask to

check out the room before I bring in my luggage. First thing I do is to

run the heat and a/c and smell the air. Good also to check the rug

around and just below the a/c.

The cleaning ladies DO NOT HAVE TO CLEAN ANYTHING IN THE A/C. I think

all they do is dust off the top. They do not wipe off the vents; they

do not change the filters (which is never done anymore). I have

called ahead and asked that the filter be changed. Some do it; others

pretend they did. It takes all of five minutes for maintenance to

come in and pull the filter and a/c out and replace it. They're just

too lazy to do it for their guests.

So if you're standing there about to move into a room but insist that

the filter be changed or you'll go elsewhere, they will comply.
