WAVERLY - Village trustees took the next step in remedying a recent

mold situation in the basement of Waverly Village Hall Tuesday as

they accepted a proposal from Chandler Fabricating and Contracting

for $635.

The awarded proposal said that Chandler Fabricating and Contracting

will remove and replace sheetrock up to four feet high from the

floor using yellow moisture-resistant sheetrock and mold-resistant

joint compound, and prime and paint.

Jeff Velardo Construction was the other bid for the project, coming

in at $750.

Investigation into the issue was initially requested of the village

by the Police Benevolent Association.

At the village's December meeting officials voted unanimously to

seek proposals for the project after reviewing recommendations from

O'Rourke Laboratory, which advised the village to replace sheetrock

and plaster walls that have incurred mold, replace rotted wood beams

found, and section off the area and use a HEPA filtration unit.

Trustee Rita Maury had also suggested crews to examine leaky windows

in the evidence locker room, which will now be handled separately,

according to Waverly Clerk/Treasurer Sondra Casterline.

The water damage was incurred by flooding from a September

rainstorm, which led to a sewage-like substance filling the basement

of village hall.

" God only knows what came up that day, " said Waverly Mayor

McDuffee. " I really don't know if we really know what caused

it . . . but it was the worst-smelling. It was just terrible, nearly

two feet of it, and it caused a lot of damage. "

McDuffee added that village police officers have been concerned

about working in the environment, adding that they shouldn't have to

work around this mold.
