When I was a child, I had them a lot. I had very dry and thin membranes and my doctor actually had to do a procedure to stop them. I eventually grew out of them.

my son keeps having bloody noses and its been going on for almost a month now. They came up all of a sudden and he keeps getting them.  he does pick his nose but could this be linked to any kind of deficiency?  He was sick a few weeks ago with a virus for about a week but he had the bloody noses before that happened.  Any ideas?

I would have an ENT look at him because nose bleeds happen for a lot of reasons. Many reasons are minor. My son started having them after an episode of dehydration. His membranes and blood vessels just hadn't healed so it didn't take much for them to occur. After being treated by the ENT, he has not had another one. Sometimes people are dehydrated and never know it, especially in the winter as we ususally associate it with hot summer weather. Sometimes it is a matter of the membranes being too dry and a saline solution nose spray can help. Even a thin layer of vasiline can help in that case.

I had very bad bloody noses from 6 years old thru 13 years old. (I'm 42 years old now.) I also had chronic ear infections from birth until I was 13 years old. The doctors never did figure out why I had the nose bleeds. It was embarrassing when my nose would start bleeding all over my desk at school. It was distressing when I would wake up in the morning and my face/hair were stuck to my pillow with dried blood. My mother tried putting vasoline up my nose before bed-she even tried rolling up cloth and putting it up my nose. Nothing seemed to stop the flow. The doctors thought my nosebleeds might be caused by vitamin C deficiency- but that was later ruled out. So the doctors never figured out what

caused my nose bleeds. The only warning I had that the bleeding was going to start was a tickly/numb feeling between my eyes as the blood filled my nose. I hope you're able to find the cause for your sons nose bleeds. If not, my hope is that his nose will stop bleeding on its own like mine did.

Nasal cauterization was the treatment. It was done in the office using silver nitrate to cauterize the blood vessels. They said it may take more than one treatment but so the one treatment was all he has needed. He had the treatment in February of this year. The pedi doctor was the one who told us to see the ENT. Not sure where you are located. We are in Galveston County and we used Dr. Pine at the ENT UTMB Clinic in League City. He is really good.

I've also been told hormones in the teenage years can make them a bit worse.  I thought my home was moist enough, but the humidifier at his bedside during the night and some saline nasal spray up his nose several times a day did help dramatically reduce them. They also has a nasal saline gel you can apply inside the nose if he will tolerate a Q-tip going into his nose in the bottom part of the nose. Personally, my own nosebleed story was that I had a vitamin K deficiency, but be very, very careful about this.  Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble meaning they don't just flush out the excess out of your system like a B vitamin would.  Supposedly the doctor had done tests and determined this, but this was back in the 1970's.  I remember taking vitamin K (it was nasty).  But my mother and father are both deceased so there is really no one to ask directly.  My sisters remember me being on vitamin K.  Occasionally I will still have them, but it's very rare.  I'll just be sitting there doing nothing and they will occur.  Hilda From: Texas-Autism-Advocacy [mailto:Texas-Autism-Advocacy ] On Behalf Of Kathleen CaldwellSent: Thursday, August 23, 2012 9:09 AMTo: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Subject: Re: bloody nose I had very bad bloody noses from 6 years old thru 13 years old. My son said it didn't really hurt, just a little uncomfortable. He didn't act like it was painful and it didn't take very long.

Before I did anything, I would see the ENT and find out for sure what is causing it. The situation may not require the treatment - the dr. may have anyother recommendation. If you give him the vitamins, etc., it may not be what he needs either. Once you know for sure what the problem is or at the very least an educationed guess if there is nothing standing out to the dr., then you can make a choice of what is best for your son.
