I had the behavioral issues w/ mirilax w/ my daugther too. Extreme anger outbursts. If it weren't for my going against my GIs initial recommendations (I later found her support w/ changing the treatment plan, but it wasn't easy) we'd still be on that stuff and I'd still have an out of control kid w/ no bowel control. We are about on year two of dealing w/ encopresis and she is a succesful pooper w/ 1 Senna tablet and 1 probiotic a day. Everyone here seems very knowledeable w/ drugs...what's the scoop on Senna w/ our kids bodies? Do I need to be worried about using this too? So far I haven't seen any side effects from this that are noticeable at least. here's one every member shouldn't miss........ ......... .....

Dawn,

In my belief, it is the Miralax. My daughter had the same problem when

our Dr increased her dosage to a full cup(the cup provided with the

bottle). She started clawing her sisters eyes, was very angry and would

explode at the least little thing, was wild at Gymnastics, unable to

focus. She was only 2, so not a lot of hurtful words, just actions.

This was all from my calm, mild mannered child....as soon as we stopped

the Miralax, it all went away....except the scar on her sisters cheek

from the clawing.

You can try the electrolyte suggestions. ..I never did, so maybe that

will help. I am not a fan of Miralax!

Good luck..I know it can be heartbreaking to see your child change like

that and the hurtful things they do, but it's not them, it the

medication that's laced with a derivative of Anti-freeze.

Manic Behavior - Help!

Hi,

My 6 1/2 year old dd is prepping to be scoped by Dr. Krigsman next week.

She has been using Miralax since last Thursday. She finally just fell

asleep a little after ten. She's been manic tonight - out of control,

biting herself, telling me that she hates herself, telling me that she

is sure that all of the kids at school don't like her (which I know is

not true), etc. Then all of the sudden she turned on a dime and became

sappy sweet and told me 3 million times how much she loves me.

We have changed nothing in her regimen for a long time. She is not

chelating or doing anything that could have an effect down the road.

I have been reading the archives as fast as I can as I just got on this

list tonight. I read something about needing electrolytes. I have our

prep instructions in front of me and there is nothing about that. Could

that be the problem, or could it be the Miralax itself? DH is traveling

right now. Should I get the kids in the car and go get some Gatorade?

Any ideas at all? I haven't come across anything about these kinds of

symptoms yet. It's getting late, so I thought I better post now and

keep reading. Dr. K. is traveling right now.

Huge thanks in advance!

Dawn

I think it's that they become dependent on it if used for long periods, ask your Physician what long periods means to find out the answer. This is what they prescribed before Miralax came along From: Laurie

Yes -- the colon can become dependant on senna and 'forget' how to move without

senna. BUT -- that seems to occur after YEARS of daily use. Check out my

'magic brownie' recipe in the files section under " what worked for us "

My GI (the same GI that had her on mirilax w/ no concern mind you) stated that there are studies showing that adults can become dependent on Senna but other studies on children to show that not to be the case for children. She even said it's not that hard to wean them off when they are ready to be. It's so hard to know what to believe. I also read that the Senna fruit is better on the body than the Senna leaf. I am not sure what my drug store brand senna is made from but I bet it's not just the fruit of the Senna. I would assume I'd need to go to our Whole Foods Store to find Senna made from the fruit? Any feedback on fruit vs. leaf and if so what brand to find of the Senna? My daugther is only on one Senna tablet a day which is less than others from what my GI said.

I hate to change something that's working unless it is known to be bad for sure. Seems to be conflicting things on that? To: miralax Sent: Monday, January 16, 2012 6:22 PM Subject: Re: Fwd: RE: Manic Behavior - Help!
