Then step inside the Mason County Courthouse. In a report presented to commissioners Thursday, A. Gerwig, environmental technician with Astar Abatement Inc., cleared the courthouse of any mold infestations. Gerwig performed the mold sampling in late November at the county's request in various parts of the courthouse, including the entrance to the county clerk's main office, the main hallway on the second floor, the records storage vault on the first floor and the prosecuting attorney's front office on the fourth floor. He added that the samples taken inside the courthouse contained acceptable levels of various types of mold spores, fibrous particulate, pollen and plant fragments. " There were no fungi identified inside that was not identified in the sample taken outside of the structure. In fact, the outside sample is two to six times higher than the indoor air samples, " Gerwig said in the report. " Based upon the samples taken during the round of testing, the structure does not have a mold infestation, and the amounts found are typical. " Gerwig added that there currently are no federal guidelines establishing acceptable levels of mold in government facilities. Industry standards indicate that the levels of mold spores inside should be similar to levels found outside, and the samples found inside the courthouse were sufficiently lower than the levels found outside.
