In a report issued to Wood County Schools by Bill Elswick, executive director of the Office of School Facilities with the West Virginia Department of Education, few signs of mold or other allergens were found during the Jan. 10 inspection. The inspection was requested by school and district officials after a parent complained about a student's increased allergies, citing mold in the school as a likely cause of the child's health problems. The inspector conducted a physical inspection of the classroom in question as well as several other rooms and bathrooms. No air samples were taken as part of the inspection. Last week's report detailed several findings, including areas of apparent water intrusion in the school's mechanical room and office restroom and a few stained ceiling tiles. The areas were found to be dry and without mold, so the report recommended finding the source of the water and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting those areas. Lawrence Hasbargen, assistant superintendent of facilities for Wood County Schools, said the recommendations fit with current district policies and procedures for such situations. The report also recommended thorough cleaning of carpeted areas, heating units and air conditioning units on a regular basis. The inspection found little to indicate dirt or allergens in those areas, and Hasbargen said regular cleanings using HEPA-filter devices are part of the district's maintenance policies.
