No Mystery to Silence

Knowing what I know of fungal lung conditions, the bigger medical mystery

is: How is it possible that a _U.S. Department of Health and Human Services_

u

man+Services?tid=informline) attorney could suffer with a fungal condition

for so long without being diagnosed [ " A Most Exotic Cough, " Feb. 5]? Fungal

conditions are swept under the rug because they are primarily caused by indoor

molds -- something that poses a financial liability for insurers and other

stakeholders.

I attended Surgeon General _ Carmona_

's two-day workshop on the

matter in January 2005. Oddly, " mold " and " fungus " were rarely mentioned. It

is no wonder Surgeon General Carmona left, because politics plays a more

important role than science in the United States.
