, was this the link you intended to send? Given the content of

the article, I wasn't sure.

Hi folks,

Thought it might be worthwhile for folks with kids as well

as individuals concerned about the interplay between

"medical divine right to diagnose" and consequences of

lazy thinking by the AMA "establishment". It's sad that

both Lord and Amy Weatherby -- Ph.D.'s -- have

been hauled out as apologists for the AMA subcommittee on

ASD. I guess that once the white coats let in non-medical

discipline members into their exclusive ranks,

professional ethics and just plain horse sense "take their

leave" as a cost of inclusion under the tent.

Below is a long link to a blog by

an influential speech-language pathologist whose primary

focus is on the context of communication (and

way of continuing her influence on providers to kiddos and

adolescents). Unfortunately, she's developed and is now

urging a bifurcated approach to choosing "some" while

discarding others as "hopeless and unable to benefit from

intervention." On that topic, consider visiting her main

page to see how another approach at social eugenics now

becomes "professionally acceptable."

Please copy and paste the long

link together as a single long line entry into your

browsers to access it. I hope this works.

My feeling is it's less " lazy " , and more $peedy thinking. ...About ca$h

- " medical economic$ " - doncha know.

I tend to agree; but there are exceptions. We're not all apologists.

In my own profession the AMA's American College of Medical Genetics

(ACMG) is the " standards " arbiter. Such " Colleges " normally are for MDs

only. This one *requires* a non-trivial percentage of its membership to

be PhD (or equivalent) *without* needing to be MDs.

The " equivalent " degree must be in a " relevant " academic field.

Equivalence and relevance (for *both* PhD and MD) is determined by

requirements of the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG), which are

*stiff*.

This is _full_voting_membership_; those of us who 'merely' held PhDs

have always made sure those who were 'only' MDs paid attention to us.

As a gratifying consequence, the College's standards have remained very

high and on point.

[Full disclosure: I am a (non-MD) 'Fellow' of the ACMG, inactive since

retirement, but/and my ABMG Certification remains active.]

Well, acceptable to some I imagine - not to me. Yet it's predictable

IMO - she's covering her butt in what's an increasingly politicized and

dicey part of field.
