Guest guest
Ok Courage, you wanted someone with something to say and now I've got a story for you! I've been a little out of touch this week with you guys AND with Grandma because I came down with the flu on Thursday. So yesterday around 1pm I get a call from my mother saying that Bob (grandma's husband) called my step-dad and said Grandma was very unresponsive and he (Bob) was wondering if he should call 911. (don't ask me why he didn't just come downstairs and get me, I will NEVER understand that old man!) So I ran upstairs to assess the situation and was confronted with a pretty scary sight. Grandma was on her back on the couch with her eyes open, mouth hanging open, breathing in short shallow breathes, and doing this little twitchy thing every once in a while with her arms and hands bent up on her chest in a tight claw-like position. She would not respond to touch or to to anyone speaking to her. Or yelling in her face which is what I tried. She was obviously breathing but when I tried to find a pulse I couldn't find one in wrist OR neck. So at that point we decided to call the ambulance. My mother arrived just as the ambulance did and she rode in with them and Bob and I followed behind. When the paramedics took her vitals her BP was 90/52 and her pulse was 60. Normally her BP is practically perfect at about 120/70. At this point I was pretty scared. The last time I saw a person look like that with a BP and pulse like that was my dad just a few hours before he passed away. By the time I arrived at the hospital Grandma was SLIGHTLY more alert and you could get a smile and an occasional " yes " or " no " to a question but her words were very slurred and quiet. She quietly allowed a CAT scan, a chest x-ray, several blood draws, and a foley catheter. I mention that because normally she would be crying and having a screaming fit about all of that. As the time wore on Grandma began to get more and more alert and therefore more and more aggitated. Every test came back completely normal, she wasn't even dehydrated as far as her blood work was concerned, I wanted to smack the nurse for saying that in front of her! ;-) She didn't have a heart attack, she didn't have a stroke, she had no infections, THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH HER! By 7pm she was cussing me out as usual. Which was quite a treat for my mom to see since she really never believed me that Grandma did that. ;-) In fact at one point Grandma looked at me and said very loudly " OH JUST SHUT UP! " and my mom was so shocked she piped in and said " Don't you talk to my daughter that way! " it was pretty funny. We got her home, she ate a tiny bit of dinner, and slept through the night. This morning she is completely back to her normal except that she seems a bit sweeter than usual. WHAT THE HECK???? So theres a story for ya! ;-) Emma
Guest guest
Wow, that is quite a story! What a weird thing. At least your mom got another dose of grams though, so all was not lost.
