Guest guest
The way that testing in a classroom is done is a complete disgrace. I, too, experience that type of nonsense, and not knowing anything at that point (1998) I did not know how to respond to the phony-baloney school system administration generated reports. They were written in ENVIROspeak, and I did not know that language, but NOW I do! I wonder if materials, like paper, books, cork boards or newsprint for easel painting were tested. No classroom should be tested under those conditions. With the windows OPEN it would seem they are trying to reflect " ambient " conditions inside. What is wrong with those testers? It may be checkbook science. If they write the check, they feel they can control the results. So much chicanery takes place. At one point when testing was to happen, VATS of polyurethane were brought in to cover the smell of mold and mildew. I learned QUICK! I wonder about the boys' locker room in the pool area. As one who was involved in swimming for many decades, I could tell you that it would probably stink from dirty socks, and sneakers, but might be overpowered from the chlorine from the pool wafting in, if that was the intent. I also wondered what the relevance would be, if the classrooms were where people were getting sick, or reactive. I never minimize " reactiveness " as an asthma attack can kill you. I laugh when I see the EPA guidelines. I testified at Cong. Conyers town Meeting in Detroit in June of '02 about what happened in my school. The EPA sent NOBODY even though they were invited, or told to show up by Conyers' office. The day AFTER my testimony, the guidelines were " updated. " Coincidence? I don't think so. At least Conyers' office has shone some light on this disgrace. Notwithstanding that anecdote, those guidelines are not even enforced. There is nothing to prevent a crew from coming into your classroom and ripping stuff off walls without any protection for you or the kids. There is nothing to protect the custodians, either, whose unions should also become more active, to protect their paying members. The arrogance of those charged with responsibility to protect children and school staff is mind boggling.
