Guest guest
I believe that most of it depends upon whether you are allergic to the bird(s). As I mentioned, even after my mold exposure, I've had up to 200 birds (down to 20 now). Reasons for selling most of them have been divorce and lack of energy to take care of them. I still have cockatoos, a cockatiel, and African greys all of which emit oodles of powder. After my pet Grey has cuddled with me, you can see the powder on my clothing. So far, so good with my lungs. Of course, if I had been exposed to mold before having birds, I would avoid them in order not to further compromise my health. In that respect, I agree with Jeff May. Bird dust can permeate every nook and cranny of the house. The best air cleaners don't keep up with it all. Amazons are not so dusty, nor are macaws. They really are cool. L> BUT, when i read that owning them was not good for your lungs, I L> really couldn't consider owning one. And that was long before I got L> sick. they live a long time. As long as us or sometimes even longer. L> There was a story that was in the news a few months ago about , an L> African Grey parrot who had been trained to use to use a form of sign L> language - He suddenly died, no warning at all. I couldn't help but L> think that maybe he got some bad, moldy food. L> Thats a MAJOR cause of death for them in the wild. Also, a lot of them L> eat some bad food and it makes them lose their minds.. its L> heartbreaking both for their human friends and their parrot spouses.. L> parrots pair bond, a lot like people... L> Once they get sick, hawks pick them off very quickly. L> RIP ...
