Sometime ago I had tried Musinex to break up the mucous in my lungs.

I had the worst tighting of my lungs that I could ever imagine. I

am at a loss how it is advertised as a wonder drug for relieving the

congestion. I think that a warning should have followed.

Here's how it should have gone, Musinex may cause the following

reactions in some individuals. May worsen breathing in some people

with severe or chronic lung disease. May cause tighting of the chest.

I have never heard such a warning ever in thier ads. It is not

such a wonder drug as they have portrayed. I know that it may work in

some people but for me it has been worthless and I have even tried

the smaller dosages.

For some reason I just cant take alot of decongestants. I am

wondering if there is something out there that I can take that wont

have side affects.

Anyone have any suggestions that I might try?

would appreciate it very much

My pulmonologist was the one who recommended Mucinex to me to help

loosen up things in my lungs enough to get a sputum sample. I've been

taking the extended-release tablets for a month or two and haven't had

any problems like those you're describing. In fact, I think the

Mucinex actually might be helping a little, though I still don't seem

to bring up much sputum.

Mucinex comes in different formulations. The one I use is strictly an

expectorant. (Guaifenisin is the generic name for the drug.) This

version of Mucinex does *not* contain any decongestant, cough

suppressant or antihistamine. But Mucinex also comes in a formulation

(DM) that includes dextromethorphan (which I think is a cough

suppressant) and Mucinex D (which includes a decongestant called

pseudoephedrine).

I used to take pseudoephedrine and/or products that included it for

sinus headaches. It was the key ingredient in Sudafed, though that may

no longer be the case. I couldn't take very much pseudoephedrine or it

would made my headache worse. The standard dose was 2 tablets (60 mg),

but I could only handle 30 mg. Pseudoephedrerine tends to increase

blood pressure and can have some other nasty side effects. In fact,

that's one reason Sudafed now uses another medication completely. That

and the fact that access to pseudoephedrine has been more restricted

since it turns out pseudoephedrine can be used to make ethamphetamine.

(At least I think that's the illegal drug it's used for.)

My point is tht if you were taking Mucinex D (with pseudoephedrine),

you might have been reacting to the pseudoephedrine rather than to the

key ingredient (guaifenisin), which is what really can help with the

lungs. Double check the package to make sure that the Mucinex you have

is *only* guaifenisin--or at least that it does *not* contain

pseudoephedrine. If I'm right about this, the *Mucinex D* is what you

really need to *stay away* from.

For more information on the different formulations, go to

http://www.mucinex.com/mucinex_DM and click on the links for more

information about each of the formulations.

I hope this information helps.
