Not surprisingly, that's when the homeless population (many of whom were vets suffering from PTSD following their service in Vietnam) began to surge. I agree that the situation has further deteriorated since 2000. Particularly shameful are the ways in which the military justifies the granting of less than honorable discharges for returning veterans serving in the Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan, so as to limit future responsibility for their mental health care. [Only the honorably discharged have full access to the benefits that are still available to our troops.] Best, ~CJ
Guest guest
My year 2000 reference was to SSA and the ability to get on SSDI/SSI (disabled with no work experience). SSA has always ran like you can work until proven otherwise. I got SSDI, on the first try, with no lawyer-just little old me filing out the form in 1994. It was for Bipolar I and I had worked decent jobs in the past. The Bipolar hit, and within 3 years, I had 12+ hospitalizations. I was a total hot mess. After 1998, SSA went hardcore, and started rejecting just about everyone. Now, forget it. Also in 1996 is when our state governor just gutted the mental health system, and closed about 90% of the state mental hospitals, leaving the jails to fill the void. Reagan was a little before my time, but I'll agree the Great Communicator started this mess. It just took the late 90s to really hit my state.
