Mold Discovered During High Renovation

Several areas of mold have been discovered in a building at

High School going through renovation.

Workers have been busy removing the tainted materials, so the

construction work can continue.

" There were five different locations where it (water) was draining

through the roof. It had leaked around the drain and created mold in

the roof, " said Casey Goodall of the Unified School District.

School officials insist the mold never came in contact with students

or staff when the building was being used for instruction.

" The mold itself was contained in the wall, " said Goodall.

Work crews lost about three days of work while the mold problem was

dealt with, but Goodall said the overall school construction is

still on schedule.

Goodall said the mold problem was a result of building age, not bad

design. " The building has been there a long time. As we work on the

roofs, the leaks occurred over time. It's being corrected as we

modernize the building, " said Goodall.

In addition to the older building being renovated, a brand new two

story classroom building is also being built on the midtown campus.

The construction is possible after a successful 2006 bond measure

that brought more than $50 million to the district.
