Hi Cassie,

Can you paste me the link you found regarding SB FlorActiv? it seems that Fluconazole (= Diflucan) (haven’t checked milder antifungals such as Nystatin etc) but seems that S boulardii isn’t too affected by taking Diflucan but maybe is best to separate days when taken...see last sentence of Wikipedia article. I can’t find anything which says that SB causes fungal infection??

Wikipedia- fluconazole, or Diflucan

Drug Interactions:

Antibiotics can cause an overgrowth of yeasts and some bacteria such as Clostridium difficile. One method of preventing this is to take a supplement of “friendly yeast” Saccharomyces boulardii. Saccharomyces boulardii temporarily inhabits to gut, preventing overgrowth of harmful yeasts and some bacteria. Take one capsule 3 times daily during and for 2 weeks after antibiotic therapy. In Australia SB Floractiv by Bioceuticals is the only available Saccharomyces boulardii product I am aware of. Saccharomyces boulardii is also available under the name Florastor. Good News: If you take SB with certain antibiotics, namely clindamycin and amoxicillin, the level of SB in your gut is substantially increased. These antibiotics kill off other organisms that may eliminate the yeast, so elevated levels of SB when taking these antibiotics are good. These drugs can cause C. diff, which SB may keep in check. Bad News: Antifungals can kill SB, just like they kill candida and other fungal infections. Fortunately, fluconazole's effect on SB is minimal, and PWAs who want to try SB can continue to prophylax with a dose of 50-100 mg a day. Even so, for optimal effect, you should not take fluconazole and SB at the same time of the day.

1. Antibiotics can cause an overgrowth of yeasts and some bacteria such as Clostridium difficile. One method of preventing this is to take a supplement of " friendly yeast " Saccharomyces boulardii. Saccharomyces boulardii temporarily inhabits to gut, preventing overgrowth of harmful yeasts and some bacteria. Take one capsule 3 times daily during and for 2 weeks after antibiotic therapy. In Australia SB Floractiv by Bioceuticals is the Saccharomyces boulardii I recommend. Saccharomyces boulardii is available under the name Florastor in many other countries.

2. The next step is replacement of healthy gut flora which are reduced in numbers by antibiotics. There are many different kinds of gut bacteria, not all are available in supplement form and levels vary from person to person. There is no one sized fits all approach. Some people need to supplement bifidobacterium and avoid acidophilus, for example. The ideal method is to test intestinal flora levels via stool testing and use an individual approach. I strongly recommend the 'Microbial Ecology Profile’ via Metametrix Laboratory. It gives a quantitative and qualitative analysis of gut bacterial balance, measuring a total of 9 microbial species, plus any other opportunistic or pathogenic bacteria. The results from many other labs which do intestinal flora analysis are close to useless.

I’ve personally found the FlorActiv really good, this is after severe diarrhoea cycles, and a constant round of constipation/diarrhoea since my teens (I’d already had nearly every year of my life on abx even then). So it may be a case that in terms of bronch, my own situation is a bit unusual, perhaps most people don’t find themselves on the abx merry-go-round til later in life ? I’d be interested to hear from others...

I ‘m not quite the 90% - had pneumonia-vax last Friday, so have had a couple of awful days, which flared the sinusitis (still waiting to see specialist for that, so just managing best I can with it, and hoping it doesn’t cause a re-infx of lungs!!! Oh what a life!!! I don’t feel quite so bad today to, and it’s gloriously sunny!

Cheers all,

joy
