If I had a pay check to bet I say I know what the mysterious illnesses are

from!! Is there a way to contact them. Many times you can respond to the

writer but I don't see one listed.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) -- The Independence School District might be

forced to abandon its administrative offices in a renovated school

building because many people who work there have suffered mysterious

illnesses.

The district spent about $2 million to convert the former school,

where former President Harry S. Truman attended high school. It

closed in 1998 and then was converted to the district's central

office in two phases, ending in 2004.

In the last several months, about a quarter of the office's nearly

60 employees have complained of such problems as respiratory

illness, tingling and numbness.

Some employees have been moved to classrooms and other spaces.

Among those who have been sickened was Superintendent Jim Hinson,

who spent eight days in the hospital last summer. Although doctors

treated him for Lyme disease, Hinson said they now suspect his

illness was related to problems with the building.

" We really don't know what we are dealing with, " said Hinson.

District officials think they may be dealing with " sick building

syndrome, " in which people have health problems in a specific

building, but no exact cause can be found. Illnesses in " sick

buildings " have been linked to mold, inadequate ventilation,

chemicals and carpet.

Randall Maley, an environmental public health specialist with the

Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, toured the

building Wednesday but found no obvious cause for the illnesses.

A senior center run by the Independence Parks and Recreation

Department operates in what was the school's cafeteria and gym. No

staff or customers of the senior center have reported any health

problems, department spokeswoman Ty Murrell said.

The two offices have separate ventilation systems, she said.

The district has hired an environmental inspector and had Children's

Mercy Hospital conduct air-quality tests. Hinson said he thinks the

district's insurance company will also send an inspector.

Hinson said he hopes to have test results back by sometime next week

so the district can make a decision on how to proceed.

It's a " real possibility " that the district will have to vacate the

building, he said, adding that it would have to lease space because

it can't afford to build something new.

I'm down here in the South watching these old textile mills being

gutted and converted into condos. And saying to myself " no way have

they killed or gotten rid of the mold " . You can rebuild the inside

but the exterior walls and floors can still be contaminated if they

were to begin with.

yep, I've been thinking about these old brick buildings and how the

tuckpointing between the bricks on my house was crumbled and mold

infesred behind the new tuckpointing that was about a half inch thick.

theres no way a person is going to get a place mold free when it's

throughout the tuckpointing and maybe even in the brick when it's

porus.some were built several layers thick. it would just keep coming

back.

I suppose the bricks could be jet washed with an antifungal chemical.

Although I don't know how deep the chemical would be absorbed into the

brick. It's still chancy.
