Guest guest
Good for you! My son was born with low muscle tone and couldn't nurse. He has a disability, so our children are very different. I nursed my second son for a long time - 2 years and he would prefer breast milk to anything else. Usually breastfed babies don't get constipated. Did the doctor prescribe this? What you are describing is what exactly happened to my first son. I thought he was screaming because he was constipated. I wish I had your instinct to stop it at that time. His doctors just kept telling me to increase it which would make his pain and screaming worst. I am not exaggerating - I would just hold him for days while he would scream. My husband couldn't stand to be in the house. And all the time I thought it was because he was backed up, but I think it was the Miralax. Maybe see about good old fashioned Milk of Magnesia. That is what I give my son now, but he is 7 years old. Best,Joanna I have recently resorted to peg 3350 for my constipated 15 month old son, however I stopped giving it to him after he was on it for 5 days. I gave it to him out of desperation, as I can no longer stand seeing him suffer ... he now holds his poop because he is afraid of pooping. He cries, sweats and will kinda bounce himself up and down when he poops ... he will even let out screams as he is pooping, it's terrible. I had read online that the body only absorbs trace amounts of the polyethylene glycol but I am having second thoughts about it's safety. Even if absorbed in trace amounts, how can that be good?In order for my son to overcome this, his poop must become soft again so that pooping is painless. Only then I believe he will stop withholding. My son is breastfed and refuses bottles therefore giving water on a daily basis is a struggle. He does take the sippy cup and some days he does better then others. He eats plenty of fruits and veggies, therefore I don't think diet is an issue. He hardly eats/drinks dairy products either. If any moms have experienced this with their child, any advice to help my son is greatly appreciated! Thanks
Guest guest
, does he take probiotics? I know women who have put the powdered form on their nipples before breastfeeding, if that could help - or in foods he does like. Guest guest
Hi Joanna, My son was perfectly fine for the first 6 months when he was only breastfeeding, he would poop several times a day. That is until I introduced solids. His poop started changing and he went from going several times a day to going every other day. I was worried then but I was told that I was over worried for no reason. It got progressively worse from there to where we are at today. The peg 3350 was prescribed by our family doctor. Can milk of magnesia be given daily? And is it safe for a 15 month old? Thanks for your suggestion > > > I have recently resorted to peg 3350 for my constipated 15 month old son, however I stopped giving it to him after he was on it for 5 days. Guest guest
take him to the store and let him pick out his sippy cups. I would refrain from ever using the ones with the no spill plugs as it made my dd learn to swallow air. Cannot go back in time now? Your diet is what his diet is, you may want to talk to your doctor about letting go of the nursing. They say once they get teeth, it's time to eat real food. To: miralax Sent: Thu, April 26, 2012 11:16:20 PMSubject: Help! Guest guest
My daughter (age 26 months) has withheld her poop since around 16 months of age. At first we thought she was trying to push poop out, but soon we realized she was actually withholding likely due to a previous painful poop. Withholding is a difficult issue as it is largely behavioral, and you can't control it - it's up to the kiddo. We used Miralax for a short time, also out of desperation, but stopped after finding this group. What we do know that works for us is this: before bed we give her a dose (for my daughter, 2 teaspoons) of liquid calcium magnesium (We use Integrative Therapeutics brand purchased at a naturopathic office). We also give her a daily morning snack of yogurt (you could sub non-dairy options), homemade prune/apricot puree, ground flax seeds, probiotics, and flax oil. We think the flax oil seems to really make a difference in softening the stool. It's a fine balance between the poop being too soft, but I would rather have that b/c then she can't withhold. In theory, after a time without discomfort, she will stop withholding. Although, I do think this will make potty training a challenge! Good luck, I know the trauma this causes a family.... > > I have recently resorted to peg 3350 for my constipated 15 month old > son, however I stopped giving it to him after he was on it for 5 days. > I gave it to him out of desperation, as I can no longer stand seeing him > suffer ... he now holds his poop because he is afraid of pooping. Guest guest
Actually, the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION and UNICEF both recommend the following: Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. Our son does eat a variety of healthy foods along with breastfeeding. There is a long list of benefits to breastfeeding for baby and mom. Research has shown that no other milk compares to breast milk as it has antibodies in it to protect baby from illness. A baby that nurses 1 year or longer will receive health benefits that will last a lifetime as long-term nursing protects against a number of illnesses. I consider myself lucky to have been able to nurse to this point and do plan to nurse at least up to 2 years. >> take him to the store and let him pick out his sippy cups. My 15 month old is constipated Hi Joanna, My son was perfectly fine for the first 6 months when he was only breastfeeding, he would poop several times a day. Guest guest
I think we will try incorporating flax oil again, along with other of the suggestions! Hopefully the combinations will prove to be successful!! To: miralax Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2012 10:31:46 AM Subject: Re: Re: Help! My 15 month old is constipated Are there other kinds of oil that aren't petroleum that work equally well? I was told by my sons gi clinic to use a tbl spoon of mineral oil mixed with plain old chocolate syrup for two weeks and it works. I was also told to mix a little malasis with warm milk.Steph It says for under age 3 to ask a doctor. So, I would speak with your doctor first. Guest guest
Thanks for all the info! Soo greatly appreciated! I will take an appointment with my family doc next week to discuss the liquid calcium/magnesium and the milk of magnesia that was also suggested by Joanna. I had tried the flax oil before however it hadn't made his poop as soft as I'd like it to be but this time I will make several changes ... so hopefully the combinations of everything is what will work.Is your daughter still suffering from constipation/withholding? And how long have you done this treatment for? To: miralax Sent: Friday, April 27, 2012 11:41:42 AM Subject: Re: Help! My 15 month old is constipated My daughter (age 26 months) has withheld her poop since around 16 months of age. Guest guest
http://member.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=21216 here's a good productWellness Centers carry liquid for children, one of the biggest struggles in all our constipation years was to find child friendly supplements. It's taken too long for people to recognize children in our society. Children are people too, their just little! ♥From: mr_mrsjacob To: miralax Sent: Sat, April 28, 2012 1:55:48 PMSubject: Re: Help!
