Kalantari Sir

I can just wish you good luck Sir in whatever you & MGIMS does.

Well the empty rows in the lectures is something that the students have to

realise from within....after all if they miss a lecture then who are they

harming ! If they realise this then well & good for their future, otherwise lets

all forget this as few animals cannot be domesticated!

“Man is small, and, therefore, small is beautiful " , argued EF Schumacher in

his 1973 book.

For years, MGIMS inspired by Schumacher’s philosophy, admitted no more than

65 students each year. Incidentally Schumacher considered Mahatma Gandhi as

the greatest ‘People’s Economist’ and was deeply influenced by Gandhi. But

then, when the entire nation is obsessed with hundred– recall the

collective sighs of dejection that used to envelope the country each time

Sachin would miss this magical number - MGIMS too decided to grow from 65

to 100.

This year, MGIMS plans to admit 100 and not 65 students. *Insha Allah* and

MCI willing- not necessarily in that order. The Medical Council of India

has provisionally permitted MGIMS to do so- based on its assessment of

faculty strength, and facilities in the labs, library, school and the

hospital. Now MGIMS, waiting for the final approving nod, is hopeful that

the approval letter shall soon appear in the Dean’s mailbox. The PMT 2012

results were announced last weekend and MGIMS may soon revise the list of

chosen ones- 35 students shall be added to the list.

So, the MGIMS campus- hostels, lanes, not-so-green gardens, corridors and

coffee houses shall have more first-year students than MGIMS had ever had.

Does it also mean that the number of empty rows in the 8 am class in the

Anatomy lecture hall- a familiar scenario these days- shall also go down?

Well, that is a 100 rupee question.

Pl do not remind me of the Anatomy lecture hall and its empty benches. I

recently visited the lecture hall. I very earnestly looked for the masterpieces

engraved by Rema the CGN of 1972. Could not find them. I saw that all the

outlets through which we used to breath freedom, have been locked. What is life

without freedom! Even the glass bottom of the main door has been repaired, what

a shame! It is through this broken pane that six of our brave classmates entered

one by one with shaved heads after a wee bit of affectionate patting the

previous night.

The verandah end, where we used to hang and swing our lanky legs to wait for

KS's better looking class mates to arrive from the hostel, has disappeared.

Please do not remind me of the Anatomy lecture hall.

More students mean more headaches also.

Law and order problems, quality of teaching, basic amenities, hostel

accommodation, water, mess facility, etc.

I hope MGIMS is geared up

For non dedicated teachers, it means more work for the same pay. It means

the same thing for dedicated teachers.

I wonder if this is a move forward or not? Nevertheless congrats or best of

luck as the case may be.

Dear Ashok,

I remember Rema as an exquisite artist who produced lovely and breath taking

line drawings. I bet you bonded well with him as he too was from the remote

North East of India. A gem of a person. BTW what does CGN mean?

Our batch-mate Tejinder Singh was from Chandigarh (No med college at that time)

and his selection was finalised also on that account. The CGN were centrally

compiled by the Ministry and then spread all over India in the Govt or Govt

aided colleges. Some were from other countries eg Angola(Batila ),

Nepal(Meera Hada), etc. I don't know as to what were the criteria for the State

nominees.....!!!!! I stand corrected if I have made any mistake.
