Some in the self advocacy community felt that the " Cassandra " label was a slur against them. You're probably right, Helen. PC or not, I don't much care what it's called though. If changing the name keeps the militants from stirring up $#!t, I'm all for it. lol > Here is another quick and interesting read when you can access it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra_%28metaphor%29 As you will see, AS gets only a passing reference at very end of the article, under " other references. " I've shared the Wikipedia entry on occasion, hoping to get a more positive reaction than I sometimes get with articles that repeatedly link the Cassandra phenomenon to AS. No such luck. Even though the Wikipedia entry contains only a passing reference, the word Cassandra alone is enough for some folks to condemn the topic outright and label the resource as just another example of " AS hate " speech. Sigh. As I've said in the past, this is the only online forum (in my experience) where I feel that folks are open-minded enough to be able to handle this topic without going off the deep end. Guest guest
Thanks Helen. My biggest hurdle right now is my daughter's depression and I don't know how to help her find her way out of the Black Hole. Any suggestions anyone? Sylvia Sent from my iPhone Hi Sylvia, It stands for "Ongoing Traumatic Relationship Syndrome." It's the same as "Cassandra Phenomenon" (CP) or "Cassandra Affective Deprivation Disorder" (CADD) If you can access the FAAAS link later, there's full explanation for the rationale of this new (unofficial) label: http://faaas.org/otrscp ly, I suspect that the name change has more to do with political correctness. Some in the self advocacy community felt that the "Cassandra" label was a slur against them. However, I think "Cassandra" term is still apt, since in some situations, everything appears normal to all in the outside world. It's not obvious that the spouse is being emotionally starved, since generally we refrain from public displays of affection anyway. Many of them forbear in silence, they can't even find the words to articulate what's wrong, so it would make them appear somewhat irrational if they did try to get help. Some may eventually start flaring out, becoming very anxious and emotional, and then they *do* appear irrational.
