Re; Kansas City Star article, " Independence District Flees 'Sick

Building...' by Mike Sherry (3/14/08)

To the Editor,

Every public building requires toxicological testing. Not an

impotent OSHA checking on carbon dioxide levels and merely cracking

a window. A competent assessment examines mold for potential

toxicity. It assays airborne volatile and semi-volatile compounds

from fuels, cleaning solvents, construction materials, and

furnishings.

I have tested a variety of residences and offices with shocking

results. Mid to high levels of pesticides banned decades before that

foundation was even dug; formaldehyde exceeding levels found in FEMA

trailers; methylene chloride from chemicals stored in a garage below

an apartment. Not unlike any other residence or office. I became

disabled in a school I was supervising after applications of

multiple pesticides.

The human genome was not designed with PCBs in mind. Many common

synthetic chemicals are less than sixty years old. We cannot survive

the onslaught, unscathed.

Test and build or rehab carefully. Sometimes you don't get a second

chance.

I should know.

THANK YOU AGASAYA. they really need to get some experts in there that

know what their doing. and with 60 people sick I'd hope they'd get a

expert flown in ti check them out. I know first hand theres little if

any help available to them. the one who got treated for kyme when the

tests were negitive is a good example. it's believed thats a high

risk of lyme disease around here and there may be but I'm wondering

who many are misdiagnoses for biotoxin and mold illness.

I'm hopeing some of our experts will make contact as we really need

some education around here on the subject. bad.

Thanks, but another reason we need to write comments there and in

other newspapers is because many of the negative comments written

are nothing more than thinly disguised bigotry, directed at inner

city schools (see references to drugs in comments). We need to

validate victims and educate ignorant people regarding the possible

hazards in many indoor environments.

For the idiots who don't care about reality, they can be drowned out

with facts and find new ways to spread hatred and disdain.

They have an excellent opportunity to get some experts to test the school. We

were asked and submitted a proposal to Dr. Jim Hinson, Administrator. We

proposed to test for pesticides, mold a construction visual inpsection by a

certified CIE, bateria, lookd into wall cavities, etc. etc. A previous

investigation of the building showed standing water in the basement. In

addition, this is a brick veneer building that with out proper sealing can allow

water intrusion. We also proposed to do a one on one interview with

questionnaires with personnel who are ill and those who are not ill. He was

supposed to submit the proposal to the school board on Tuesday, 2008. We have

not heard from him. It is my understanding that indivdiudals with health

problems are being ignored and shunned. Perhaps, someone should tell the

Kanasas City News Papers to contact us. Jack D. Thrasher, Ph.D.]
