Guest guest
Hi... Believe me, I know it' s tough dealing with many of the things that chiari throws at us. And yes, anxiety seems to play a pretty good size part for many of us. The issues with words was always big with me. In my case...working crossword puzzles helped a lot. Not a total fix, but a darn good help. Believe me, I understand the issues with balance, etc. Up to a month prior to my decompression I was TEACHING fitness classes. But " stuff happens " ... I also think it's a big help not to concentrate on what we CAN'T do...better to try to find out what we CAN do! I had to give up some things that I loved, as well. The catalyst for my chiari becoming symptomatic, I believe, were a couple of falls from horseback. This was something that I REALLY enjoyed. However, it made no sense to continue to risk fate. I still enjoy being around horses...I just have elected not to ride. I grew up at the shore and LOVED amusement rides. Sadly, most of these are simply asking for trouble with a Chiarian..so they have been moved off the " to do " list! These are just a couple of the choices I have made..but I am really not complaining...it was, IMHO, worth it. We are, in a way, fortunate that we CAN make some lifestyle changes that CAN be helpful to many of us. This is not the case with all afflictions. As far as burning energy goes...something as simple as a good walk in well cushioned shoes can do a world of good. As far as the mini-tramp goes..I shudder a bit. When I was teaching, I strongly disliked tramps for anyone, the potential for injury is huge. ..However for chiarians, they are really a no-no. Yes, your legs are protected from some impact but what about your brain being bounced around...IMHO, NOT a very good choice. Again, even with Pilates or Yoga ( I taught them, too <g>) Please don't take an " all or nothing " position. You simply have to be a little selective and understand what particular things could cause you problems. With both Pilates and Yoga there ARE things which can be done safely... And certainly there are those which would be not recommended. Learning AMAP about the whole chiari condition and thus what limitations are there is so important. We each have to make choices for ourselves balancing the concept of risk/reward! But by doing this we are really able to help ourselves have a better quality of life. IMHO this is a VERY " good thing " !! All best wishes, Sally R... Guest guest
You might consider not doing the trampoline thing. The impact could contribute to downward movement of the cerebellar tonsils. It also might irritate your inner ear balance.
