Guest guest
Was watching a debate on NDTV about doctors going to US signing a bond – to return and practice in India. What do the group think about this? It takes a long time for doctors to ‘mature’ as it were. To gain financial viability too takes longer. The demands on personal time is great. My take would be if your child enjoys medicine- the human contact, the talking to people, the satisfaction gained by healing someone (believe me it still exists)- make all efforts that they realise their goals. On the other hand if your child is not keen on medicine- do not force them. The main advantage of a medical degree is its transferability and employability. There is no doubt that a doctor/physician starts late in life. Not only in India, but world over a doctor is considered 'safe' to take care of people's health/life only after long years of training. Many of us already know it, but just pointing out, that in North American continent, admission into medical school is only allowed after graduation, that too after a very tough entrance exam. Then, there is tremendous amount of stress involved while going through the training, and later working as independent practitioner. Though the remunerations are pretty good(400 to 500 thousand $ per year), it is a debatable issue that how much one can enjoy it. Considering these points, we are also not encouraging our daughters to go into this field. And I know many people who don't want their offsprings to become physicians. The flip side is that, there is no retirement age(in private practice), and in spite of Aamir Khan and worsening general impression about us in layman's mind, there is still fair amount of respect for us in society vis a vis lawyers, Police department and govt officers. We can continue to discuss virtues of the 'noble profession' the 'healing touch' till cows come home, but ultimately it is one's own choice if he/she has the 'fire' inside to go into it. I have NOT sent any of my 2 kids to medical profession. Wonder what the others think about this!!?? Guest guest
I agree too, DDM and Sanjay M... about not wanting my kids to take up medicine as a profession. I have let them chose their own career path. My elder daughter has taken up B Com and plans on MBA. The younger, is still in school and of course she'll decide what to take up as a profession when the question arises. If she wishes to do it as per her choice she will have my support but I for one will never force her to enter this stream.
