Physician - to be or not to be

I agree with DDM.

There is no doubt that a doctor/physician starts late in life. Not only in

India, but world over a doctor is considered 'safe' to take care of people's

health/life only after long years of training. 

Many of us already know it, but just pointing out, that in North American

continent, admission into medical school is only allowed after graduation, that

too after a very tough entrance exam. Then, there is tremendous amount of stress

involved while going through the training, and later working as independent

practitioner. Though the remunerations are pretty good(400 to 500 thousand $

per year), it is a debatable issue that how much one can enjoy it. 

Considering these points, we are also not encouraging our daughters to go into

this field. And I know many people who don't want their offsprings to become

physicians. 

The flip side is that, there is no retirement age(in private practice), and in

spite of Aamir Khan and worsening general impression about us in layman's mind,

there is still fair amount of respect for us in society vis a vis lawyers,

Police department and govt officers. 

We can continue to discuss virtues of the 'noble profession' the 'healing touch'

till cows come home, but ultimately it is one's own choice if he/she has the

'fire' inside to go into it.

It is amazing that the

policy-makers don’t seem to realize that créme-de-la créme is being

neglected and is suffering

whereas the students in other streams

manage to give them a huge lead by longer stride, though perfectly legitimate!!

I have NOT sent any of my 2 kids

to medical profession. Wonder what the others think about this!!??
