Guest guest
Mold found at high school The Wenatchee World Online - Wenatchee,WA* Posted February 22, 2008 http://wenatcheeworld.com/apps/pbcs.dll/articleAID=/20080222/NEWS04/9 23253501 WINTHROP — Students at Liberty Bell High School moved out of a science classroom last week after mold was discovered under above ceiling tiles due to a leak in the roof. The leaking occurred after heavy snowfall pulled down some heat tape on the roof, and ice dams formed and backed up into the building, according to Superintendent Lou Gates. Gates said the school district will replace the moldy sheet rock -- which includes only two small areas -- with mold-resistant material. He said a similar problem occurred several years ago, in a heavy snow year. Gates said the roof is designed to act as a cold roof, which would remain cold enough so that ice dams would not form. Most of the roof works as designed, but there are areas where the roof warms up, causing the ice dams, he said. " We're hoping not only to deal with the issue on a short-term basis, but to find a long-term solution, " he said. Gates said he's not sure when the classroom will be used again, but the district will test the room's air quality before students move back in. -- K.C.
