There is some light at the end of the tunnel for the doctors at the

Kincardine Community Medical Clinic.

The doctors and Council agreed to a 2-stage plan developed by local

contractor Don McArthur at last night's meeting.

The first stage will see 1 million dollars set aside to clean up the

mould and install a drainage outlet in restoring the basement to its

original use..

The second stage will see a mid-size ground-level addition built to

the doctors' specifications located somewhere on the hospital site

at a cost to be determined.

Mayor Larry Kraemer says this is a good compromise as it provides an

immediate interim solution to the mould problem in the basement.

He says this will also leave 1.5 million dollars available to work

on the next stage.

Kraemer says this solution will put some ease on the 2008 budget as

the cost will not have an impact on the tax rate.

He says they can look at restoring some of the projects that were

cut during deliberations and set reserves for projects down the road.

Kraemer says with the cost of remediation to the basement to be

taken out of reserves he sees the tax rate to be set between 3 and 5

percent.

As for the doctors and staff at the clinic, while they maybe

satisfied with the solution there is concern about the mould

spreading from the basement up to the clinic.

Doctor Gurbin says there has been an increasing number of staff

that have developed respiratory symptoms.

While the basement is closed off the flooring hasn't been removed

and continues to collect mould spores.

Doctor Gurbin says samples have been taken from the basement and

will know by next week if it is mould.
