Mehdi Hassan is no more!! On a lighter note Some one sent a Summon to God and

said  " Your love for films (Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand), music ( Jagjit Singh,

Bhupen Hazarika and now Mehdi Hassan), and technology (Steve Jobs) is now beyond

doubt. May we suggest that you take keen interest in Politics as well! "

............We will miss them all immensly!!

Subject: Cartoonmania

Today there is a report that M Karunanidhi wants a cartoon in a Class XII

NCERT book showing anti-Hindi campaign launched in Tamil Nadu in the 1960's

removed. Why? Because it may infuriate the Tamils. Only Karunanidhi knows why it

may infuriate the Tamils. Perhaps his thinking has got slightly distorted. By

the way, paraphrenia may afflict a few persons in advanced age.

Let us forget Karunanidhi for the time being. A woman who is widely believed to

be paranoid even went for the arrest of people who she thought were lampooning

her in their cartoons a few weeks ago. It later turned into a national tamasha.

Soon thereafter we saw collective stupidity in the Parliament. The members

(ironically, they insist on being addressed as Honourable Members) created a big

ruckus over a cartoon showing Ambedkar getting whipped for his slow progress on

the constitution for which he headed a committee . Even apes are capable of

better behaviour.

The most important question is this: Why do we dread cartoons so much? One

simple view is that Indians lack the sense of humour. It is appropriate to

mention subtle humour here. Otherwise an average Indian does love Laloo-Govinda

chhaap homour. Secondly, we cannot accept the other side of our character shown

in cartoons. Thirdly, some of us could be having ideas of persecution. (Stalin

suffered from paranoid personality disorder which made him kill millions of his

countrymen.) Fourthly, we are simply stupid to waste our time on unimportant

things.

There is one more reason for the comical actions of people who go after cartoons

(and cartoonists). Seemingly, they have a valid reason this time. They fear

competition from cartoons. Which 'cartoon' would like to have himself cartooned?

They want us to enjoy the live cartoons crawling around in the political world

instead of getting diverted by the figurative ones. Who has not enjoyed seeing

Laloo in his knee-length underwear, scratching his copious abdomen and chewing a

man while he entertained visitors at his official residence?

I feel newspapers and magazines should not waste any space by printing cartoons.

It is absolutely unnecessary. Let the people see the real cartoons.

Sad indeed, about Mehdi Hassan, but as they say only one thing is certain

in life and that is death :-)

I liked that line about politicians ;-) but then the Almighty has his own

plans :-D

Yes, it was a great voice. There was this SMS doing the rounds which said:

The mother of all ghazal nights will be held in heaven tonight when Mehdi

Hassan meets Jagjit Singh.
