--- Carol,

Mom had a spell where she was losing weight last year, and she

has dentures but she still doesnt like tough meat, i would utilize

hamburgar alot at that time.I made shepperds pie, chille, spaghetti,

etc.the sheppards pie is nice if they like the taste because you can

throw in peas , corn , or green beans as the veggie. She is eating

well now and maitaining weight but this lewy ride has many many

turns.I hope this helps ron

Carol,

I used to work with a developmentally disabled woman who had a hard time chewing

and

we simply cut everything she ate into very small pieces. ANYTHING can be eaten

this way.

You just take a good pair of kitchen shears (like the kind you would cut up a

whole raw

chicken with) put the food item in a bowl and start snipping. This way the food

retains the

taste and a little bit of texture but can be swallowed with minimal to no

chewing. We

really did it with everything from salad or green beans to pizza! With the

dryer things (like

pizza) we would add a little extra sauce if needed. Easy chew items that we

didn't need to

chop were things like meatloaf, mashed potato (or sweet potato), turkey burger,

creamy

soups, stuffing (like the thanksgiving kind), pancakes with plenty of syrup (I

recommend

the Hodgson Mill Multi grain with flax seed and soy protein pancake mix), nice

moist

muffins if Millie likes those, cream of wheat hot cereal, oatmeal.

Those are my ideas for the moment...hope it helps!

Carol,

I really think this is a pretty common phase with LBD patients. I've talked

with several who have had their LO go through it, and we certainly did with

Mom. We tried a number of things.

Protein drinks. You can buy the powder at GNC or Costco - well, heck, it's

all over the place nowadays. (One great resource if you want to purchase

samples is www.vitalady.com <http://www.vitalady.com/> ) I would take a

little bit of fresh fruit, throw in some ice cream, a splash of heavy cream,

a scoop of protein powder, a scoop of Benefiber or Metamucil, a couple of

tablespoons of olive oil, and blend it all together. It would make a pretty

amazing shake - which she perceived to be an ice cream type treat, and

happily consume! (This during the phase where she went 14 weeks without

consuming solid food!)

I also work with patients who have had GI surgery, and we take them through

a progression of diets after surgery - going from clear liquids, to full

liquids, then on to soft foods. We define soft foods as: anything you can

cut easily with a plastic fork. Some things that work out well during that

phase:

Scrambled eggs with melted cheese on top

Mashed potatoes and lots of gravy

Tuna, chicken, or egg salad (Mom would eat this with potato chips very

happily!)

Quiche

Soups with thoroughly cooked components

Chili

Loaded baked potato

Fish filet

Shrimp

Yogurt

Soft cheeses

Fresh fruit (melons, especially)

Thinly sliced deli meat

Steamed veggies (on the overcooked side) - throw a yummy sauce on top!

Well, there are a few ideas.

Hope they help!

Blessings,

Dina

Carol - there's a book out there called

" I Can't Chew Cookbook "

by J. Randy

" The I Can't Chew Cookbook is a rare find, addressing the issues and

providing solutions for people with chewing, swallowing and dry-mouth

disorders. This book is full of delicious recipes from casseroles to

creamy shrimp and noodles. Chapters include Drinks, Soups, Entrees,

Vegetables and Deserts. " Don't have it personally but it looks like

it would be a good read for the FT caregiver - you can purchase here:

http://www.alzstore.com

But I found this online for you:
