Surgery gave me back my life.....ironically, my neurologist was nervous about me

deciding on surgery, too.

I would do it again....I had no choice.

Good luck,

Charmaine

Subject: Trouble thinking - Chiari related or

Tethered Cord or What???

About my son. He is in his mid 30s. He is having a lot of trouble

thinking straight and being able to hold a conversation and it's

getting worse. When we set up dr. appts I have to have several

conversations with him before hand to be sure I get all the questions

and issues on my list to talk with the dr. about. If anyone suddenly

starts speaking with him, he can't hold a conversation with them.

His short term memory is almost completely gone, too. The worst time

of day for him is always mornings. It used to take him about 1 hr to

get his act together, phsyically and mentally, now he is a mess until

4pm. He can hardly take care of his personal hygene anymore and I do

everything else for him, housework, cooking, etc.

We are going to TCI Dec 29th & 30th for eval. and I'm being told that

most likely we will be sent home afterwards to mull over the

recommendations of the drs, and that the people who get usually get

surgery immediately there are in a paraplegic state.

My son is suffering terribly with his headaches now. They are

constant and at times so dabilitating that he cannot move, open is

eyes, call me for help or anything for hours. I'm getting scared to

leave him alone anymore but I can't move in with him for lots of

reasons...I have a huge house with a husband and 2 dogs to care for,

I'm disabled somewhat myself and have FMS, CFS, TMJ, OA, to name a

few. He lives alone and refuses to come live with me and his

Dad...says we'll drive him crazy...I can understand that. He's left

the nest and it's hard to come back. So much for background info.

The bottom line is that my thinking is with any brain disorder, the

more symptoms from brain damage you have, the more permanent they

become and the less likely the chance of them improving after

surgery. So my reasoning is why put surgery off until you have so

much brain damage? His PCP keeps saying avoid surgery at all costs.

If it were me, I go for it in hopes of getting my life back...oh yes,

he is a single parent with a little girl who he can't take care of

either. Anyone have any input for me on these issues?
