Hi Kristal,

Sorry this is so long!!!

Acne can be seen in both hypothyroidism and low cortisol! It can be a

combination of both at the same time. Many doctors only test the blood TSH when

testing your thyroid which does not give you the whole picture. We need to be

proactive and ask (even insist) that our doctor also check our free T3 and free

T4 along with the TSH to give us the full picture.

Even these blood tests do NOT always show how we feel. Finding a doctor that

also considers symptoms is a –must- if you want to feel WELL again. I have

central hypothyroidism and the almighty TSH test almost killed me.

Please keep in mind that I am not saying all cases of acne have to do with the

thyroid. If you have a family history of thyroid problems, and have symptoms of

hypothyroidism, your acne could definitely be caused by your thyroid.

In my case, the T4 I was taking caused acne and it also caused more than just

acne symptoms; it caused severe swelling; I become crippled within a year; my

hair fell out by the handfuls; my brain function declined to almost

non-existence; my mood diminished to crying several times daily; the insomnia

was horrific; my hands, arms legs and feet would go numb; I had migraine

headaches; and synthetic T4 also caused severe heart issues that went away

within a week of stopping it.

Some of us also need the active thyroid hormone, T3, and canNOT live without it.

I am a prime example, I went into a Myxedema coma in 2004 due to much too low

T3. Now I take desiccated thyroid 2 grains and an additional SRT3 (slow-released

compounded raw T3) 42.5 mcgs daily. We can get T3 via Cytomel although it is

fast release and only stays in the body 8-12 hours. (I have read that a

slow-release T3 drug is in the making, which should be an option in the future.)

It is NOT just me and you as the Synthroid insert clearly states some side

effects are hair loss, heart palps, shortness of breath, numbness, headaches,

and rash/acne etc.

Studies indicate ashwagandha possesses anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antistress,

antioxidant, immunomodulatory, hemopoetic, and rejuvenating properties. It also

appears to exert a positive influence on the endocrine, cardiopulmonary, and

central nervous systems.

Ashwagandha has been used in Indian (Ayurvedic) tradition to help with issues

linked to hormone imbalance – including stress, anxiety and metabolism. It is

recommended by several thyroid doctors to help modulate the adrenals and

thyroid. It is a true adaptogen, since most adaptogens are very good at

supporting the adrenals, and it has proven its ability to work with the entire

endocrine / hormone system. It is also used to stablize blood sugar.

Ashwagandha has been shown to increase the amount of hormones secreted by the

thyroid gland. It's unknown why this happens, but it has some type of regulating

effect on thyroid hormone secretion. The studies on this herb do not show

selectively that the herbal extracts cause the secretion of more T4 or T3, but

both levels go up slightly with the supplementation of high quality ashwagandha.

It is in my adrenal support supplement and I believe it helps me. I also take

Inositol and Chromium to help with my recent fluctuating blood sugar and low

insulin problem. Fixing the blood sugar helps the adrenals to function more

efficiently.

Best in health,

~Bj
