In March, commissioners voted to advertise for bids to put a new roof on the east wing of the old health department building on Waco Street. Commissioners have been considering refurbishing it and also modifying the west wing to allow for several county offices to move from the courthouse to make room for a third courtroom. Commissioners voted on the bids, totaling almost $48,000, during a Monday meeting. The east wing has been vacant for years and the roof leaks. During a meeting in February, several county elected officials expressed concern about whether the building is useable due to it being infected with mold. County Clerk Pat Brady said a person has been looking at the interior of the building to determine the amount of mold and how to remove it. Whether the bids will be awarded is contingent upon the inspection. The west wing is presently occupied by a group of charitable organizations and commissioners promised to find a place for them if they have to move out to make room for county offices. The offices under consideration for moving are the commissioner's office, treasurer, assessor and county clerk.
