Guest guest
Okay kind of a long explanation. But Mitochondrial disease means that the mitochondria in our body aren't working right. Sometimes folks have too many, some folks like Abby don't have enough, some folks have mitochondria that are there in the right number but don't work right- it is a disease of Energy- we cannot live without mitochondria. Lots of folks with Mito deal with fatigue- but not all people. Mito can occur at any AGE.They are still learning about what causes Mito. But there is primary(born with errors in the mtDNA and nDNA) and then there is Secondary Mitochondrial disease which cause damage to the mito via drugs or other diseases...mito has been found to be connected to all sorts of diseases from Huntingtons to Parkinsons to Autism to kidney disease to hearing loss.. the lists are endless...The symptoms are endless. For Abby, her biggest symptoms are poor muscle tone and fatigue-and she had those since birth. They have not found any mutations yet. They did a muscle biopsy when she was little and found just the myopathy(muscle fibers did not look right) and did not find the Mitochondrial depletion(not enough Mitochondria) when they did a second biopsy at 15.Recently even the CDC admitted vaccines can trigger a mitochondrial disease which triggers autism...I know a few different adults on different groups who developed Secondary Mitochondrial dysfunction due to various medications- of course I have to wonder if PEG should be added to that list one day as well.. I always tell folks who want to learn more to go to UMDF.org or MitoAction.org both terrific sites- they are suspecting 1 in 2000 will develop somesort of mitochondrial disease- yet, they have so much learn- everyday they are learning something new.GI issues are very common in this population- poor motility is sooo common- so many if not most of folks with Mito have dealt with constipation - which means miralax as a first defense.. http://mitochondrialdepletionsyndrome.blogspot.com/ To: miralax Sent: Tuesday, June 5, 2012 7:03 AM Subject: mitochondrial disease Diane, could you explain the disease your dd has? What do you think????NattalieAbstractBackgroundThe use of herbal medicines (medicinal plants or phytotherapy) has recently gained popularity in Europe and the United States. Nevertheless the exact mechanism of the preventive effects of these products is still far to be clearly established, being its knowledge necessary to successfully apply these therapies to avoid stone formation.MethodsThe effect of oral lemon juice administration on calcium oxalate urolithiasis was studied in male Wistar rats. Rats were rendered nephrolithic by providing drinking water containing 0.75% ethylene glycol [v/v] (EG) and 2% ammonium chloride [w/v] (AC) for 10 days. In addition to EG/AC treatment, three groups of rats were also gavage-administered solutions containing 100%, 75% or 50% lemon juice [v/v] (6 ìl solution/g body weight). Positive control rats were treated with EG/AC but not lemon juice. Negative control rats were provided with normal drinking water, and were administered normal water by gavage. Each group contained 6 rats. After 10 days, serum samples were collected for analysis, the left kidney was removed and assessed for calcium levels using flame spectroscopy, and the right kidney was sectioned for histopathological analysis using light microscopy.ResultsAnalysis showed that the rats treated with EG/AC alone had higher amounts of calcium in the kidneys compared to negative control rats. This EG/AC-induced increase in kidney calcium levels was inhibited by the administration of lemon juice. Histology showed that rats treated with EG/AC alone had large deposits of calcium oxalate crystals in all parts of the kidney, and that such deposits were not present in rats also treated with either 100% or 75% lemon juice.ConclusionThese data suggest that lemon juice has a protective activity against urolithiasis. Background To: "miralax " <miralax >Sent: Tue, June 5, 2012 6:34:24 AMSubject: Re: OCD PEG behaviors Abby took it about 6 months.. everyday we see small improvements- but it is so hard to tell because of her mitochondrial disease- which the symptoms could be either..We thought her Mito disease had suddenly started progressing- that is what the drs kept telling us- thank god my gut told me to look up the Miralax- I cannot even to bring myself to think how bad things would be if we had kept her on it....her hair is still falling out 2 months later, but it has slowed..
