Nguyen (3/3108)

To the Editor,

I was a supervisor in a New York school until neurotoxic pesticides

were applied and I because brain damaged. The use of those

chemicals was denied by applicators and building staff. I could

have continued to let my medical bills mount while doctors scratched

their heads. Instead, I invested $450 in a laboratory analysis of

baseboard swipes. Two chemical formulations were discovered. From

there, the correct medical implications were assessed, though not in

time to prevent my damage.

New York City residents proved they were being poisoned by

malathion, dropped by helicopters. A bipartisan, congressional

hearing put an end to it, though not in time for all who were harmed.

New York City residents proved they were being poisoned after the

EPA said all was well with our air after September 11. Efforts to

clean up began, though too late for many.

All over America, children and adults are ill from materials

containing high levels of formaldehyde in 'forest products',

insulation and even clothing. You can test your home or office for

under $150 and be sure.

The EPA tells us our indoor spaces are two to five times more

polluted than the outdoor air. Remember that when professionals

arrive to spray on insulation, exterminate, seal a floor, or clear

your lawn of dandelions with the wave of a wand. Everything winds

up in your lungs and absorbed into carpets, furnishings, sheet rock

and clothing.

Stop thinking 'science' is for the 'other guy'. Look into the

availability of toxicological testing for your places and

possessions. Pool resources with other stakeholders if the costs

are too high for any individual. Legal limits for the poisons

around us were not calculated to meet the diversity that is human

biochemistry. Until we take measurements of indoor air quality back

into the realm of reality, today's " science " will remain the

strictly corporate issue it has become in today's world.
