He told me that large studies of constipated children failed to show any benefit to dietary changes such as increasing fiber, despite the fact that this works in adults. In 13 years of practice I have certainly found this to be the case. Miralax draws fluid into the colon because of the osmotic force it exerts. It does not act directly on the bowel so it does not lead to dependence by itself. I prescribe it all the time and I am sure it is among the safer medications I prescribe.
