How about taking her some Kid Calm, Aloe Vera, Smooth Move tea,

mineral water a batch of GF magic brownies?

Good idea! I’ll try that for the next time her kid gets

constipated. Thank you!

Well, I just won the “bad neighbor” award. My neighbor called to say her daughter was suffering terrible constipation, so she took her to the doc. Doc gave her Miralax. When she told me that, I gasped out loud and, without thinking, said, “You didn’t give it to her, did you?!” Of course the answer was yes. Still not thinking, I went into a quiet tirade of why that was not a good idea and what she could’ve done instead. I feel so bad on one hand that I wasn’t asked what I thought or for advice and for my quick reaction, yet on the other hand, my God! When will they stop giving this to kids?! I mean, seriously, the kid had 3 days of constipation – what about mineral oil?? They jump so quickly to a prescription! Well, now I have to make amends with my neighbor. I think she likes chocolate chip cookies…

Here's what I would recommend:

Stop giving whole grains -- I know I sound like a wacko but what

happens is the GI tract slows down and then our kids seem to become

gluten intolerant. I don't know if it's because of having less of

the enzyme in their body to break down the protein or it has stayed

in the GI tract too long and now they are 'allergic' to it, but in

general, gluten tends to cause constipation. For a few weeks at

least, have your child get their carbs from sweet and reg potatoes,

rice crackers, vegetables (some kids have issues with corn), popcorn,

and a limited amount of rice. Go with grilled meats and fruit for

dessert. Sulphur vegies are best -- broccoli, cauliflower, etc

Eliminate dairy too. If you just can't take that complete jump --

then limit dairy to whole milk organic yogurt. (Same reason as

above -- casein protein intolerance)

Add Kid Calm- http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=5120 & at=0

Mix 1/2 tsp in a few tablespoons of hot water, add lemon juice,

stevia, honey or sugar and ice water to make 4 - 6 oz of lemonade.

Add a splash of cranberry juice (100%) if your daughter likes it.

Day 1 - give once a day

Day 2 - give twice a day

I also gave to my son as a warm fizzy lemon drink.

If no BM on day 2, administer a glycerin suppository. Keep up with

the Kid Calm 2 x per day - increase to 1 tsp per if tolerable for

taste. Ok to substitue with Natural Calm, the Vit C and zinc in the

Kid Calm helps to heal the gut and Vit C can loosen stools, but if

your child doesn't tolerate it for some reasonk Natural Calm will

work.

Add frequent epsom salt baths -- 1/2 cup or more to bath - soak for

20 min.

Water (add lemon and stevia if you must). My son (6) still needs

reminders to drink water. I send him to school with a camelbak and

he knows he's supposed to drink that empty during the school day.

20ml%20camelbak.

Someone posted a 'recipe' to soak flax in water and then pour off the

water and drink/us in recipe. I haven't tried this -- but it

wouldn't hurt!

Others have had luck with aloe vera - Trader Joes carries it. We

didn't, but it's worth a try.

Senna helps too -- just don't use it too much. When I was first

getting my son off of miralax I made this brownie recipe - GF brwonie

mix from Trader Joe's or

http://www.amazon.com/Pamelas-Chocolate-Brownie-16-Ounce-

Packages/dp/B000DZKKK2/

and the rest is in this thread

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/message/2422

I gave him a little (less that 2 " x 2') square every few days (freeze

and warm in micro). It really helped to get him on a schedule. He

would typically have a brownie and then have a BM a few hours later.

I now (2 1/2 yrs post miralax) still have to watch things. We are

not 100% GFCF anymore, allowing a hamburger at times. He takes

Kirkman EnzymComplete with most meals and is generally no longer

contipated. I also swear by LiverLife -- it helps him clear acids

from his body and contains medicinal mushrooms to help the immune

system.

Hope this helps.
