Thank you for this response, this is exactly what I would like to see. The way in which you went about this is exactly the manner in which seeking help should take place. Excellent job!I would like to take a quick moment to respond to you and others who have repeatedly stated that I don't understand because I haven't "walked in their shoes." I personally have 2 children and plan to have more. I have been dealing with a child who has been on Miralax for almost 4 years. It has been a struggle to get her off, each and every time she is

being weened off she gets painful constipation. When I joined the group 2 weeks ago my goal was to see if there were any options that the group had found that would appear to be safe for allowing my child to get off of Miralax. It enabled me to do more research into the subject and eventually get her off for the last week without any problems. I was shocked by some of the posts and some of the recommendations that I had seen so I spent time putting together some references and documentation to present to the group. I saw some of the posts having recommendations that would have seemed safe had I not been in the medical field, but knowing what I know now I wanted to bring to light the possible dangers so that no child gets any treatment that could be dangerous. Thank you again for your excellent example of researching and using medical professionals to

help you in your desire to help your children. (If I could apologize for the lack of understanding and lack of empathy among the medical field I would, I know that it is very frustrating and disheartening that one cannot get consistent care among medical professionals) To: "miralax " <miralax > Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2012 9:52 PM Subject: To the pharmacy students

Please do not judge us unless you have walked in our shoes. My daughter experienced many issues while on miralax and all issues were well documented. We have experienced other health problems which make me wonder if problems are related to the usage of miralax. I am currently begining to work with a team of doctors who think outside the box. I was told by the referring physicians to please share this information about my child's experience.

I read a letter on this site just recently from a lady who has experienced leakage. My daughter too has had the same problem for 3 years. That is when she came off miralax. Huummm that makes me wonder...... Doctors are baffled.

When we experienced our initial problems I contacted the physician who prescribed this for.her. No returned calls. I faxed him letters no returned calls or faxes. I went to my family doctor no luck there he kept saying take her back to the specialist and would not help. I wound up talking to my pharmacist and.had the drug tested. It came back safe. The pharmacist advised me to take her off this and try natural alternatives. We worked hard to find our root to her stomach issues. We did as Dr. Phil would say a lifestyle change. It worked for our constipation issues.

I realize the pharmacy students feel they know the answers but please remember that life teaches us too please as you enter your careers please look and listen to all sides, research and evaluate before making decisions. God be with you in your future careers.

Pharm students-

I think what you may be naively missing is that many of parents struggling with

Miralax have gone through a very similar process. What child on Miralax for many

years has not already been to see pediatricians and pediatric GI specialists

countless times for consultations? Parents are on this board because those

specialists do not have answers.

I think you may also be a bit naive in your understanding of modern medicine.

Evidence-based protocols advance in fits and starts. You should read Kuhn's

Structure of Scientific Revolutions. It may enlighten you as to how schools of

thought dominate " objective " science and how existing failing paradigms in

science are often only abandoned after a long fight.

Likewise, let's be a little less naive about the history of pharmaceutical, food

and product safety in the US. As a parent, I am constantly seeing recall notices

for children's products. One only has to dig slightly deeper to realize that

product safety is often obtained on the backs of dead and injured children after

the fact.

I think it is a very reasonable for a parent to hear other parents' anecdotal

reports of side effects, listen to their ped GI's devotion to their protocol for

constipation (stool softening), and evaluate that against the risks and benefits

of other alternatives.

That said, I do agree that we should all be cautious about supplements. Let's

not abandon one danger in favor of another danger.
