Guest guest
Moldy Apartment Makes Baby Ill Craven - 5/17/2008 News Channel 12 New Bern, NC* http://www.wcti12.com/PrinterFriendlyNews.asp? STORYNUM=1211079972 & recordsource=NEWS2008 Mold fills nearly every window sill in Amy Armstrong's apartment. Three-month-old Gracie Mae sleeps only a few feet away from one moldy window. Armstrong took Gracie Mae to see a doctor after she started wheezing and coughing. A doctor prescribed breathing medication that Gracie Mae must take every four hours, but the near-by mold won't go away. Armstrong says, " I've used a toothbrush on my windows. I've used everything and in a matter of time it comes right back. " Boards appear to rot under the air conditioner, the ceiling sags in spots, and stains in others. Armstrong's doctor asked the Health Department to inspect the apartment. Environmental Health specialist Debra Yarbough belives the aprtment could have even more unseen mold. Yarbrough says, " You can clean up the mold and the amount of mold that was there but you also have to take care of the reason why the mold is growing. " Yarbrough adds that mold could be growing in the apartment's carpet. Armstrong says for four months she's complained about the mold to her landlord, Edwin McKnight. She says McKnight refused to repair leaks throughout the apartment and will not let her out of the six months remaining on the apartment's lease. Armstrong doesn't doesn't think Gracie Mae can wait that long. Yarbrough says, " The younger a child is exposed to these contaminants that you breathe in the more likely it is that the child will develop athsma. " News Channel 12 was unable to contact McKnight about the mold.
