Guest guest
Sigh... males. ;-) Donna... I am not too experienced with adult issues when it comes to our kiddos but my gut says YES Monty would be able to learn a new form of communication! We never stop learning or wanting our kiddos to learn... Gabby tends to be around the 2.5 yr level (very near her younger sib) and I think there is a lot you can do with a child at that skill level... better if it's an older skill level. He may be more ready now than before, too. Gabby, too, is non-verbal. It has made those around us stop and think... what is going on there? She doesn't understand or ? But she *does* she just cannot voice it... sounds like Monty. She will not point things out, but rather brings to me. Its awesome to see her w the aug. comm. device... like an entirely different girl behind what you see. Anyway, I'm babbling tonight but those are my thoughts on the matter! Sandy mom to Gabby (6, ds-asd) and Adam (2) AC ohhHHHhhh, augmentative communication!! Montyman is 20 now. One thing I know, he understands a LOT when we talk. But being typical male, (haha) he has selective hearing. He DOES understand, tho. It has been much easier for me to relate to him on the level of a typical three to four year old! My grandsons, now ages 4 and 5, have just re-introduced me to that age level, and I couldnt BELIEVE how normal Montyman is for that age! Being in a 20 year old body confused me.....expecially with the typical horrormoans running crazy. Once I re-adjusted my thinking to the three year old level again, things became much more understanding for me! As far as communications, does anyone think a 20 year old non-verbal person has a chance to learn a new form of communication? He loves computers, but never showed any progression with the AC devices that we tried.....yet, he can master a computer game if he is interested in it! (one on a pre-school level) I still think he is ALOT 'cause and affect'. I think he is just typical Tycer, (my husband's family) and just likes things his way or no way. LOL MontysMom donna..... Guest guest
Hi Monty's mom, Hmm, you give some hope here on what you had mentioned about the timing when Monty has started mastering using the computer, even at a preschool-level. wants no part of it at this time. Maybe this will kick in soon, at least to the computer. The only time he'll want to sit at the computer is to listen to his read-along Disney books. has graduated to about 3 words in a sentence lately and of course its only when he wants something. During his elementary years basic sign language was always used, but he will not use it unless he sees that we don't understand him. So we'll do the signing of eat or more and then he'll repeat signing the same with a verbal yes. We've tried AC but it never has worked for him as he'll just play with it. PECS he'll understand by pointing with choices, but never on his own. Sometimes when the sensory issues kicks in, it can be a battle but the basic sign language comes in handy as his mind returns to earth. I hear ya on the age level when your grandkids are around, I noticed the same thing when my younger neices are around and then its a reminder of the mentality of a preschool level. How funny that you blame it on your dh's family, I do the same, too. Love it! Irma,14,DS/ASD > ohhHHHhhh, augmentative communication!! > Montyman is 20 now. Guest guest
Montyman's Mom, I definitely think he can learn to use AC especially if he likes computers and cause and effect. Ask for a AC evaluation to be done by the school district. Here in California we have a specialist who does the evals and the training. It could be Monty didn't have an appropriate device. We are trying really simple ones with Brook right now and will progress to more complicated ones as he masters them. Guest guest
Hello, What is the best option if I can't use a whole house (Central) AC unit? Can I get by somehow with several window units and what is a good measure for maintaining them or preventing mold build up? It seems like possibly all AC units bother me at this time. Thanks **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food.
