Mold fears continue at Emerson

GARY -- Parents of students at Emerson School for the Visual and

Performing Arts have retained personal injury attorney I.

Polansky to address fears that mold remains in the building despite

a spring-break cleaning.

Polansky, who heads the Chicago law firm Polansky, Cichon & Batey

Chtd., will address parents this week at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Upper

Room Church, 2407 Grant St., .

The public is invited.

Polansky contends three toxic molds remain in Emerson.

" All three of the molds have myotoxins and are capable of causing

illness. You cannot eliminate the mold until you completely

eliminate the water source. They have not done that, " Polansky said.

Fliers circulated at Emerson on Tuesday accused the district of

painting over mold. Polansky said he fears the district simply used

bleach on the mold.

" That's not how you remediate mold if it's toxic -- even done 100

times it won't help. "

Sarita s, director of communications for Community

Schools, said the attorney is spouting " speculation. "

s said in the last three weeks J & K Environmental and school

custodians have used both bleach and microbicide known as Shock Wave

to remove mold. That was followed by a treatment known as After

Shock, which encapsulates treated areas to inhibit future mold

growth.

In one room with extreme mold, s said drywall was torn down.

Tests of Emerson's air quality will be available Thursday.

s said pipes have been repaired and windows sealed to end

condensation and moisture.

Polansky said his firm has retained a certified industrial hygienist

and is seeking permission to enter the school.

" We want to verify if it's still present and if it is, whether it

presents any health hazard, " he said.
