Did a course of antibiotics precede constipation?

Did anyone experience the onset of constipation in your child during or following a course of antibiotics? I would guess that most doctors do not tell parents to supplement with probiotics during and after a course of antibiotics. Antibiotics will wipe out probiotics and cause an imbalance in the gut flora. Treating with PEG will not improve this underlying condition and may cause it to worsen.

My kids have only used antibiotics 2ce, but doctor never mentioned - good thing I knew to up theirs. I've asked pharmacists about it too and they don't recommend either. I don't think it is standard protocol, although it should be. Should be on the prescription label instructions. Carol

Yes, we did. My daughter had a UTI at about 11.5 months. She was on a 10-day course of antibiotics. NO constipation issue before then. Then at 12 months, I put her on whole milk. And of course, she received her scheduled vaccinations around then, too.Perhaps the combination is what threw her little body into malfunction. I will never know what may have been the initial catalyst, but I know that she now does VERY well on lactose free milk so..... I was prescribed antibiotics when I was nursing my son -- he developed constipation shortly thereafter!

Of course, I didn't make the connection til much later but the fact that you bring it up makes me seriously

consider that it was a factor...
