Guest guest
Hi. Recovery from the side effects of Miralax takes time. My daughter was put on it at 18.5 months, I got her off it at 25.5 months and it took her over a year to recover fully. One of the reported adverse side effects is a condition called paralytic illius where the drug can cause the natural motility of the digestive tract to stop working thereby causing constipation and making it nearly impossible for an individual to have a BM on their own without the aid of a laxative. Most choose to remain on Miralax or something similar. However, for those who are suffering from serious side-effects, that's not exactly an option. You may want to check out the "What worked for us" in the Files section of this forum. Try taking probiotics and also drinking plum smart juice (this last has worked wonders for my daughter). Also, take some digestive enzymes. Fruits such as mango and papaya are naturally high in digestive enzymes. You can't overdose on those, so eat those as much as you can stomach. If the prune juice worked for you, these other ideas may work, too.I'm sure others on this forum will chime in with helpful hints, especially those who, like you, took Miralax long-term as adults.I wish you good luck and a swift track off the Miralax hamster wheel.Lillu To: miralax Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 1:41 PM Subject: My experiencies with Miralax I am 56 year old female. After a traumatic divorce at the age of 43 I started to have a problem with BM. I was struggling on my own for a decade, it was getting worse. Finally I went do a dr. Without any hesitation or futher checkup, he recommended Miralax / Lax a Day here in Canada. I am on Miralax for 2.5 years, daily dose 1 full cup plus, about 25 grams daily. Lately I realized I developed some rapid heart beat, higher blood pressure,(in level of 130 /90 ) I am constantly nervous, have increased anxiety, I am constantly agitated, everything is irritating me. I have no patience at all, I am also losing my appetite. No appetie at all. My dr. thinks everything is in my head, since my blood work in January was ok. There is shortage of family doctors in my area, noone is accepting new patients. I am afraid that's all side effects of Miralax. My dr. doesn't think so, saying they give Miralax to children and that Miralax is safe for long term use. After reading posts on this web site, I do not think so. I am afraid to take Miralax anymore, but have no BM without it. I tried old prune juice for last two days, it worked, giving me some sort of diarheea similar BM. Anyone had similar experience with Miralax. Did anyone stopped Miralax "cold turkey" after being on it for 2.5 years daily ? What did you use. I eat everything "right". Bran with flax oil for breakfast, vegetable soup and some fish, chicken for lunch. A lots and lots of fruit, as cherries, kiwi, mango, peaches, also green salads. Drink about 2 liters of water daily, still no go without Miralax. Any response is greatly appreciated. PS: Sorry for my english, as I am ESL. Thank you. Guest guest
Of course "it's all in your head!" It's not in his. You are suffering from these bouts of anxiety and typically something is causing the anxiety. A responsible physician should not be dismissive of a patient's concern. Unfortunately, the type of physicians we all wish for are far and few in between. My DD's pediatrician, my OBGyn, and my primary care physician ALL gave me the same response when I mentioned Miralax - "It's perfectly safe." Well, I'm sure most physicians felt the same about ALL those drugs that have been recalled for one serious reason or another. Even Tylenol and Motrine can cause serious side effects. Miralax was NEVER intended for long-term use or for use in children under 17 years of age. They physicians are making those decisions on their own and their patients are the ones who suffer the consequences. As you are the one suffering these side-effects, you have to follow your own gut (literally and figuratively) and do what is best for you. You may also want to take a print-out list of the adverse side-effects as reported to the FDA with you when you next see your doctor so that he may take your complaints more seriously as your side effects are on the list. Also, if you can, please keep a journal of your trials, tribulations and successes on your road to recovery after Miralax. I wish I had done that with my daughter.Good luck to you and please keep us posted. To: miralax Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 2:25 PM Subject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax Thank you very much for the answer. When you stopped cold turkey, what were you using instead of Miralax? Or did your bowels just worked on their own after such a long time on Miralax? If you could please let me know. I am going to see my dr. next week, but I am afraid he will just push me into using Miralax, as it was in January, when I already expressed some of my concerns to him. Basically, he laughed at me, and told me that everything is in my head.....All this stuff is taking over my normal life, having it on my mind 24/7.... Unfortunatelly, all he takes is 10 minutes with one patient. From those 10 minutes, he is typing 5 minutes on his pc, updating the address, double checking DOB, phone #, a joke, atc. And really, I tried another dr, no one is accepting new patients, unbelievable. I checked the box you recommended, yes, I tried all of those with no much success, except of Miralax which works in increased dosage. Now I did not take it for 2 days. I know that this anxiety makes things worse, now I am not sure, should I take Miralax again, till I see him or try more prune juice. I am horrified of being impacted, as I read some really bad stories. I am thinking about Natural Calm, have some at home, but I also read about adverse effect of this stuff on kidneys.... Guest guest
So, right after you stopped it cold turkey, your bm were just normal, without taking anything else? Unfortunately, that's not my case, I was actually reading some posts where some people had success stopping in verly slowly, weaning off for several months... So, why were you taking it in the first place? I took it, because I was constipated for a long time and was always struggling in that department - well for a good decade, right after a traumatic divorce, when my problem started. I know, nothing is going to change his mind. I don't understand it and fell so alone with this my bm problem. I am ready to give up........it's no quality of life at all, constantly thinking about bm, I refuse to travel, goind on vacation, because I am just scared I won't be able to go.... > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female. Guest guest
how about taking Senna tablets which is over the counter? can you use suppositories until you find something else that works for you? I would never ever return to mirilax w/ my daugther. I am so mad at drs. for saying the same things to me about it being safe and then seeing agressive behaviors in her from it. I hope you find something that will work. Guest guest
Well, I hope that you no longer feel alone. People on this board will give you their opinion and advise you with what worked for them. If you believe that weaning is the best course of action for you, then try that. You may also try an elimination diet - take foods that may be constipating (and many types of foods that my not occur to you as constipating may actually be constipating) out of your diet. Eat ONLY foods that would normally help you go. Too much fiber can be too binding, so eat foods high in that in moderation. Completely remove all dairy and white anything from your diet. At the same time, take the probiotics (make sure they contain no dairy), digestive enzymes, fruits high in digestive enzymes, etc.I am sorry that your doctor is such an uncaring turd, but these days, you have to be your own best advocate, and the internet can be a wonderful source of information. Use it to your advantage. There is a plethora of experience on this board so do not hesitate to ask questions. Someone will answer. Also, remember, it will take time to get your system back to normal. Don't give up too quickly, keep a journal of intake and output and keep tweaking your diet until you arrive at what works for you. Guest guest
In addition, to the elimination of dairy, etc. as suggested by another group member, I would suggest that you start the Natural Calm (1 tsp twice a day and up to three times a day), a probiotic, and reduce the Lax A Day gradually. You may also want to try flax seed, and psyllium for additional fibre. Increase your intake of water and if prune juice is helping then take it. You should also be exercising and sticking to a regular routine regarding meals and sleep. Introduce these changes slowly to see if it eases your anxiety and helps your digestion. Good luck. I actually handed my list (with the side effect, with my daily menu monitored for 1 month), to the Dr, when I was in his office in January. Guest guest
No, thank you. I checked hundreds of sites, info on the Internet, tried this and that, but nothing ever worked, except Miralax. In my diet there is no white bread or anything from white flour, only whole grain - 1 slice a day, 1 cup pf bran cereal with raisins plus 2 tbsp flax seed oil for breakfast, vegetable soup with chicken or salmon with green salad for lunch, dinner - fruit, kiwi, mango, pears, cherries, peaches, etc. I eat a lot of fruit during the day. At least 3-4 peaches, 4 kiwi, 3 mangos, plus cherries. Absolutely no junk food for years. No cookies, no cakes,no chocolate, no ice cream, no pizza. Occasionaly I would have some lean sausage with my soup. I was also reading some confusing things about probiotics, since some people take it to fight diarheea. I was taking them for a while, perhaps 2-3 months, did not notice any difference at all. Also, some people take yoghurt with probiotics, what seems to help them. But youghurt is diary, so what's right? Actually, I would prefer to stop Miralax cold turkey, but I am terrified to get impacted, as I already have from straining (before Miralax) some hemmorhoids. Miralax kept those in order, no problem with bleading or pain or so. I am afraid, that prune juice won't be strong enough. Ona person here suggested taking pill with Senna - what is a stimulant laxative, which I think is also dangerous as it triggers peristal. motion of intestines. I was also reading about taking Colace. But then, is it not just switching from one devil to another devil..... My husband thinks I should keep taking Miralax, that it is not dangerous for adults. I disagree, as I absolutetly can see changes in my own behaviour. Plus, my heart is racing and I developed high blood pressure, when I always had a low pressure, . I am just afraid, that my system at this age just won't jump back to some semi-normal routine. I was keeping a journal before, my DR did not even want to have a look. Perhaps I will start it again, but I cannot see any happy ending. As I was reading in some Files on this site, there were people that committed suicide while taking Miralax. I am afraid I will end up the same way, because all this eliminating issue is simply overtaking my life, it is on my mind every waking minute, as much as I try to relax and be positive. Thank you for listening. > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female. After a traumatic divorce at the age of 43 I > > > > > started to have a problem with BM. Guest guest
Thank you so much. I actually have Natural Calm at home, bought it a while ago, but was afraid to take it, as I was reading it is hard on kidneys. But I am thinking about that. Psyllium - I tried Metamucil for almost a year, did not work for me, I was constantly bloated, bloating it never went away, it did not help with BM. I drink faithfully 2 litres of plain water a day. If you are talking about reducing Lax A day greadually, is it any regimen / procedure, how fast/slow should I reduce it. Go by days or weeks....I don't know at all. As much as I would prefer to stop cold turkey, I am afraid it won't work that way for me, alough it worked for some people as I read. If anyone has some positive experiences with stopping gradually, could you please let me know. Thank you so much. > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female. Guest guest
For us blackstrap molasses, lemon juice and figs do the trick for our youngest she also will drink caffeine (black tea)to help. For our oldest she finds raw baby spinach, magnesium(supplement and bathing in epsom salts) and senna when needed seems to work. The youngest has a ton of allergies that once we removed seemed to reduce her constipation. For the oldest dairy is the number one contributor to her issues. My youngest did the best once we removed all corn products. After talking to so many folks it seems there are many different reasons for constipation and just as many different ways to help relieve it, and it can be dangerous if not treated for the individual. all treatments should be discussed with your Dr.My youngest got very very ill (anxiety,OCD,rash, mal nourishment, made her kidney disease worse and more)from the Miralax, but when my oldest has used it we have seen no ill effects. Like any product there are side effects that may only effect a few, perhaps it is safe for you.Hope you find a solution, and find a Dr. willing to help you resolve this health issue.Diane http://mitochondrialdepletionsyndrome.blogspot.com/ To: miralax Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 7:19 PM Subject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax No, thank you. Guest guest
Thank you again for the answer. I am just " glued " to the pc right now, , since my Dr.'s answer is the same: all is in my head, Miralax is safe, it is prescribed to children, it's ok long term, just take more. There are absolutely no dr. accepting new patients in my area, , nothing, I am looking for - for a new one for months and months, nothing. My Dr.'s answer is, as we get older, we all have problems. And I am in and out of his office in 10 minutes, that's the time limit what he has for one person. I guess, I just have to die of something, anyway, that's how I feel. Even if I would know, that Miralax " buys " me 10 years of normal life, I would take it. But the side effects are just getting worse and worse, racing heart, raised blood pressure, anxiety, irritability, panic attacks, anger, afraid to eat any food, not willing to do any traveling, because it might interrupted my " schedule " and I won't be able to eat " my " food. I don't eat like normal people anymore, checking everything what I put to my mouth, if it has fibre. Lately I started to take it on my husband, unfortunately and he seems to have enough of my eliminating issues..... He thinks I should eat more bread, potatoes, cheese, butter, chocolate, and I will be able to go every days with no problem as he does. Unfortunately, that is not the case with me. . I was reading about organic non sulfur black molasses as well, but again, some people found it binding, as it contains iron, so I was afraid to take it. I am glad it works for your child tho. I am thinking about taking Natural Calm, together with decreasing the Miralax - perhaps by 1 tsp a week....am not sure. I am just so tired of this, sometimes I do not want to wake up in the morning. Plus, I started having some sort of weird dreams, not sleeping normal, and I am not sure if it is a result from my anxiety or from the Miralax. Thank you again to all, for listening and for advices, I guess, I will have to do something, before I will go completely insane. > > > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female. Guest guest
I would definitely check for lyme disease, in my opinion, if this JUST started happening, then something must have happened. I by no means am saying that the medication couldn't be causing but if you went that long with no side effects, your gut ,may be able to tolerate. Lyme is very prominent in Canada and the testing is inadequate. If I were you, I'd find a lyme literate doctor. ILADS doc's/ many try to come to US for treatment and finding one. ask them to test you for lyme. Western Blot, not . Canada's test, only tests for strains outside the country.......http://vitalitymagazine.com/article/lyme-disease-goes-under-the-microscope/ From: najvacsia To: miralax Sent: Thu, August 2, 2012 12:41:57 PMSubject: My experiencies with Miralax I am 56 year old female. After a traumatic divorce at the age of 43 I started to have a problem with BM. I was struggling on my own for a decade, it was getting worse. Finally I went do a dr. Lately I realized I developed some rapid heart beat, higher blood pressure,(in level of 130 /90 ) I am constantly nervous, have increased anxiety, I am constantly agitated, everything is irritating me. My dr. doesn't think so, saying they give Miralax to children and that Miralax is safe for long term use. Guest guest
One daily 8 oz glass of prune juice might not be enough, if your problem is serious. Every day my 2 year old son gets 6 ounces of pure organic prune juice (Lakewood brand, which is not made from concentrate, and shows more nutrients than prune juice made from concentrate). And my son doesn't eat that much. I suspect an adult would need a much larger daily dose to keep regular. > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female. Was the files section generated to you when you came on? To: miralax Sent: Thu, August 2, 2012 2:25:10 PMSubject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax I actually handed my list (with the side effect, with my daily menu monitored for 1 month), to the Dr, when I was in his office in January. Unfortunatelly, all he takes is 10 minutes with one patient. From those 10 minutes, he is typing 5 minutes on his pc, updating the address, double checking DOB, phone #, a joke, atc. His answer: Miralax is safe, we prescribe it to children and that was the end of that. Take more......When I asked question, I had a list of 10 questions, he told me: I don't have time, I have to go, just take more Miralax.... And really, I tried another dr, no one is accepting new patients, unbelievable. I checked the box you recommended, yes, I tried all of those with no much success, except of Miralax which works in increased dosage. Now I did not take it for 2 days. Yesterday I had bm with the help of 2x 8oz of warm prune juice. Today I took so far 1x8oz of prune juice, so far nothing. No sure what to do at this point....I am afraid to eat anything, this situation is literally killing me. My husband is of no help at all, the same attitude as dr, " all is in my head", I should eat more bread and potatoes....and I will be fine, as is he. . So, I feel so isolated, so this site is the only place, where someone with similar experiences listens. Thank you so much again. > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female. Guest guest
Ex-lax worked well for us too..........To: "miralax " <miralax >Sent: Thu, August 2, 2012 3:13:11 PMSubject: Re: Re: My experiencies with Miralax how about taking Senna tablets which is over the counter? can you use suppositories until you find something else that works for you? I would never ever return to mirilax w/ my daugther. I am so mad at drs. for saying the same things to me about it being safe and then seeing agressive behaviors in her from it. I hope you find something that will work. To: miralax Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 2:23 PM Subject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax I actually handed my list (with the side effect, with my daily menu monitored for 1 month), to the Dr, when I was in his office in January. Guest guest
http://www.shop-orthomolecular.com/store/DigestzymeV.html here's some digestive enzymes recommended for usTo: "miralax " <miralax >Sent: Thu, August 2, 2012 6:26:24 PMSubject: Re: Re: My experiencies with Miralax Well, I hope that you no longer feel alone. To: miralax Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 4:12 PM Subject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax So, right after you stopped it cold turkey, your bm were just normal, without taking anything else? Guest guest
Natural Calm is highly recommended by wellness practitioners, worked well for us too........To: miralax Sent: Thu, August 2, 2012 7:26:39 PMSubject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax Thank you so much. Guest guest
Thank you so much. I will take some tonight. I guess, I should start decreasing Miralax slowly, instead of quitting suddenly. Even it's a poison to the body, I am afraid it would be too much of a shock to my old system. So, I will start with 1 tsp of Natural Calm, plus my regular dose of Miralax(as much as I hate to do that), since I did not take it for 2 days and there is no much movement....in that department. And tomorrow I will start taking 2 a day 1 tsp of natural calm a will decrease slightly, perhaps by 2 tsp my daily dose of Miralax. Will try to keep it that way for about 2 weeks, and will see. I found it horrible, that we live in so called civilised and so developed and modern countr,y, paying my health insurance for years and suddenly one is on his own. > > > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female. Guest guest
I found this in a British website. Have not tried it, but perhaps it may be helpful. Also, have you had your thyroid checked? If not, ask to have it tested (simple blood test). The Beverley- Natural Laxative MixtureThis recipe (detailed below) was studied in a research trial that involved older people in a care home. A treatment group was compared to a non-treatment group. The conclusion of the study stated that "the Beverley- natural laxative mixture, given at a dosage of 2 tablespoons twice daily, is easy to use, cost-effective, and more effective than daily prescribed laxatives at producing normal bowel movements". So, it may be worth a try.Recipe ingredients - one cup each of: raisins; pitted prunes; figs; dates; currants; prune juice concentrate.Directions - combine contents together in grinder or blender to a thickened consistency. Store in refrigerator between uses.Dose - two tablespoons twice a day. Increase or decrease dose according to consistency and frequency of bowel movements. This is the website: http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Constipation-in-Adults.htm
Guest guest
Cheese? Does he really think cheese helps you "go"? Bread, potatoes and cheese are three big stoppers! To: miralax Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 7:59 PM Subject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax Thank you again for the answer. I am just "glued" to the pc right now, , since my Dr.'s answer is the same: all is in my head, Miralax is safe, it is prescribed to children, it's ok long term, just take more. Even if I would know, that Miralax "buys" me 10 years of normal life, I would take it. But the side effects are just getting worse and worse, racing heart, raised blood pressure, anxiety, irritability, panic attacks, anger, afraid to eat any food, not willing to do any traveling, because it might interrupted my "schedule" and I won't be able to eat "my" food. Guest guest
First of all, sweet of your husband to make suggestions but bottom line is you are not him. You cannot do what he does. Miralax does not work, as you can see by your ever-increasing side-effects. Although I'm no doctor, I can hear the desperation in your voice in your comments ("Some mornings I do not want to wake up."). I've been there before with my son. Again, even though I'm only a doctor through Google and experience, I do believe in grabbing the bull by the horns and moving forward. Now. Here are my suggestions for you:1. Quit the Miralax. 100%, right now. No excuse. Throw it away so you are not even tempted. 2. Triple up on the Nature Calm. When you get to a diarrhea type stage, back off by 1/2t. until you get what you want. Then maintain that dosage.3. Drink PlumSmart.4. Add fish oil supplements - QUALITY! As in Dr. Sears, NordicNaturals. DO NOT get some crap like Target, Walmart or GNC. Double the suggested dosage on the bottle. 5. Add probiotics - QUALITY! As in Kirkmans, KlaireLabs or something from a co-op. Do not eat probiotic yogurt - it contains too much sugar and counteracts the good stuff (all that is just marketing anyway....). 6. Take regular Epsom salt baths. Everyday. 7. Add JuicePlus capsules or gummies into your diet. They are fruits and veggies in that form. (www.healthwithsusan.com or www.juiceplus.com) 8. Stop eating ALL gluten (careful, it's hiding EVERYWHERE), dairy (cheese, milk, ice cream - butter is okay) and bananas. 9. Increase eating vegetables and fruits.10. Lessen eating meats - eat only in small quantities a couple of times per week. 11. Try to eat as "natural" as possible: if you can't pronounce or read an ingredient, do not buy/eat that food. Buy organic food as often as possible (I don't know your financial situation). This is helped by shopping the perimeter of your store...the junk is in the aisles and at eye-level. 12. Swim or walk 6 days a week. Alternating is best. 13. Tummy massages every single night before bed. Rub your stomach clockwise and hard. Picture the stool moving through your intestines as you massage. You can use olive oil to help. 14. Consider: 1T of aloe vera juice in your PlumSmart per day. Good luck. You asked for advice and this is mine, so take it for what it's worth to you. ~ Tracie Cheese? Does he really think cheese helps you "go"? Bread, potatoes and cheese are three big stoppers! Guest guest
Well done Tracie! To: miralax Sent: Fri, August 3, 2012 8:39:01 AMSubject: Re: Re: My experiencies with Miralax First of all, sweet of your husband to make suggestions but bottom line is you are not him. Now. Here are my suggestions for you: 1. Quit the Miralax. 100%, right now. No excuse. Throw it away so you are not even tempted. 2. Triple up on the Nature Calm. When you get to a diarrhea type stage, back off by 1/2t. until you get what you want. Then maintain that dosage. 3. Drink PlumSmart. 4. 9. Increase eating vegetables and fruits. 10. To: miralax Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 7:59 PMSubject: Re: My experiencies with Miralax Thank you again for the answer. I am just "glued" to the pc right now, , since my Dr.'s answer is the same: all is in my head, Miralax is safe, it is prescribed to children, it's ok long term, just take more. > > > > >> > > > > > **> > > > > >> > > > > >> > > > > > I am 56 year old female. Guest guest
I know, I do not eat those at all, at all, but he thinks otherwise, , so I am not following this his advice, of course. > > > > > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 56 year old female.
