Guest guest
I have heard some say magnesium, flaxseed and other alternatives. I must say that I used Miralax solely but have wanted to stay on top of what others were experiencing from it so I could watch for signs or anything out of the ordinary. However, over the course of the year plus that I used it for my son we dropped down to just a 1/4 teaspoon a day to keep him going everyday on a regular basis - this was the minimum of what he needed as long as I was ensuring he ate enough fiber. Despite what Dr. rec'd I opted not to go to one and be told to give him what seemed inappropriate amounts for a child but I did find that he worked well with it at this small, regular dose and then when he was fully on the toilet pushing we weaned him off completely. I'm sure you will be flooded with answers soon but it probably takes a lot of figuring to see what combination will work best. Good luck ! Are you as a group or families individually recommending something other than Miralax that has worked to clean-out and/or maintain your child due to constipation? Are Lactulose, flax, any other fiber, omega's etc on the table? I'm brand new to the group and my 5 1/2 year old has been using large clean-out and maintenance doses of miralax for a year. Any advice, recommendations, would be so appreciated.
Guest guest
I would also love to hear some suggestions. My 4 year old is on amino acid-based formula, which causes severe constipation. She reacts to mirilax (which is how I found this group, I was trying to find others who didn't tolerate the mirilax, which had been proclaimed " safe for everyone! " by our GI). Because of her eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease, she absolutely cannot do anything that is food based (flax, etc.) We are trying a magnesium supplement in hopes that she tolerates it. The only other suggestion by our GI is mineral oil, and as much as I hate to have her drinking yet another petroleum byproduct, I'm not sure we have many other options. > > Hi friends. Guest guest
I've never heard of amino acids doing that. But the formula is only amino acids, no proteins or fiber whatsoever. We knew about the gastro disease first. She was only on the mirilax because of the formula, and only on the formula because of the gastro disease (and because she's allergic to all food.) We have done high dose probiotics, but they don't seem to help at all. We also can't do xylitol (or any probiotics with inulin/FOS) because of her gastro issues. > > > > Hi friends. Guest guest
My almost-4-year-old takes Neocate formula. You might try that. It is very very expensive, but doctors can write a prescription for it. Any other formula, and the constipation is out of control.
