Guest guest
Hi everyone,I'm new here and have been reading the "Beginner's file" - is this the best approach described below? Did everyone see immediate results? I'm so afraid my daughter's going to get constipated... what should I do first or should I do all of them at once? Also, can Kid Calm be purchased at Whole Foods or most local vitamin shops or only online? Thanks,SimonaFrom: mommtlc To: miralax Sent: Thursday, December 18, 2008 3:47:58 PMSubject: Re: miralax and my neighbor How about taking her some Kid Calm, Aloe Vera, Smooth Move tea, mineral water a batch of GF magic brownies? > > Well, I just won the "bad neighbor" award. Guest guest
This list was just a few of the things that have helped all of our kids. It was not meant to be a 'to do' list. Please post with what you've tried, what's worked, what your child eats, behavior, issues, etc. You'd be surprised what a few great minds can piece together and give you suggestions. Remember to add comments like when the problem started (after the DTaP shot for my son) and visible signs like dark circles under eyes, eczema, etc. LeeAnn > > > > Well, I just won the " bad neighbor " award. Guest guest
My daughter is 5 and has had constipation issues since about 3. Interesting you mention the DTaP shot since that's probably the age she got it. I have tried Miralax and Pedia-Lax pills and flax oil/flax seeds (but she won't take it and notices it if used in food). Miralax and Pedia-Lax both work but I think the Miralax causes her stomach pain. That's how I found this group by trying to find side effects since I suspected the Miralax was hurting her tummy. My doctor has been no help really, she just recommended the Miralax. I know she needs to drink more liquids as well. I'm not even sure exactly what amount of liquids she needs per day (she weighs 39 lbs). She eats whole grains and fruits but is still constipated constantly. If I don't give her something she gets backed up and it's hell. Visible signs... she does have dark circles and she is on the thin side.I really want to start something natural that will help her but I am very scared she will get backed up. It's terrible how much she suffers when that happens. I also mentioned to my pediatrician if she has some kind of blockage how would we know. She said that would not be the case since her constipation started at about 3 and she wasn't constipated as an infant. Thanks for any of your help,SimonaTo: miralax Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2008 7:55:32 PMSubject: Re: miralax and my neighbor This list was just a few of the things that have helped all of our kids. Guest guest
Here's what I would recommend: Stop giving whole grains -- I know I sound like a wacko but what happens is the GI tract slows down and then our kids seem to become gluten intolerant. I don't know if it's because of having less of the enzyme in their body to break down the protein or it has stayed in the GI tract too long and now they are 'allergic' to it, but in general, gluten tends to cause constipation. For a few weeks at least, have your child get their carbs from sweet and reg potatoes, rice crackers, vegetables (some kids have issues with corn), popcorn, and a limited amount of rice. Go with grilled meats and fruit for dessert. Sulphur vegies are best -- broccoli, cauliflower, etc Eliminate dairy too. If you just can't take that complete jump -- then limit dairy to whole milk organic yogurt. (Same reason as above -- casein protein intolerance) Add Kid Calm- http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=5120 & at=0 Mix 1/2 tsp in a few tablespoons of hot water, add lemon juice, stevia, honey or sugar and ice water to make 4 - 6 oz of lemonade. Add a splash of cranberry juice (100%) if your daughter likes it. Day 1 - give once a day Day 2 - give twice a day I also gave to my son as a warm fizzy lemon drink. If no BM on day 2, administer a glycerin suppository. Keep up with the Kid Calm 2 x per day - increase to 1 tsp per if tolerable for taste. Ok to substitue with Natural Calm, the Vit C and zinc in the Kid Calm helps to heal the gut and Vit C can loosen stools, but if your child doesn't tolerate it for some reasonk Natural Calm will work. Add frequent epsom salt baths -- 1/2 cup or more to bath - soak for 20 min. Water (add lemon and stevia if you must). My son (6) still needs reminders to drink water. I send him to school with a camelbak and he knows he's supposed to drink that empty during the school day. http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay? categoryId=57506 & storeId=1 & catalogId=1 & langId=-1 & feat=sr & freeText=500% 20ml%20camelbak. Someone posted a 'recipe' to soak flax in water and then pour off the water and drink/us in recipe. I haven't tried this -- but it wouldn't hurt! Others have had luck with aloe vera - Trader Joes carries it. We didn't, but it's worth a try. Senna helps too -- just don't use it too much. When I was first getting my son off of miralax I made this brownie recipe - GF brwonie mix from Trader Joe's or http://www.amazon.com/Pamelas-Chocolate-Brownie-16-Ounce- Packages/dp/B000DZKKK2/ and the rest is in this thread http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/message/2422 I gave him a little (less that 2 " x 2') square every few days (freeze and warm in micro). It really helped to get him on a schedule. He would typically have a brownie and then have a BM a few hours later. I now (2 1/2 yrs post miralax) still have to watch things. We are not 100% GFCF anymore, allowing a hamburger at times. He takes Kirkman EnzymComplete with most meals and is generally no longer contipated. I also swear by LiverLife -- it helps him clear acids from his body and contains medicinal mushrooms to help the immune system. Hope this helps. > > > > > > Well, I just won the " bad neighbor " award. Guest guest
Hi Simona, Regarding the comment the pediatrician made...My son (age 5)was recently diagnosed with encopresis, had a blockage/mass--but had no problems with constipation as an infant. I believe his problem started with his gradeual change in diet (high in dairy, low in fiber) and also exacerbated by starting Kindergarten this September. Just a suggestion, but you may want to see a pediatric gastroenterologist. I am not a big fan of Miralax (for all the side effect reasons) but I think the drs. do have some other options. Good luck--it is not a fun issue to deal with for sure... Kathy Re: miralax and my neighbor This list was just a few of the things that have helped all of our kids.
