I will keep it on list as it may help more as well. yes if your dr says your child NEEDS those suppliments and they are medically necessary then you can count them off to apply for food stamps IF You have an SSI disability label. anything that treats there condition, therapy stuff that an OT writes is needed, the Dr's appointment, miles, HBOT, ect

that few hundred dollars can make a difference, one kid only counts like 133 dollars off or something like that depending on their age....also depends on how much is in the 401K your rent or house payment, ect...

We had to show up in person with the members of the family. We wereinitially approved then they asked for a spend-down figure and itwould all be finalized, I gave it to them then they said that the 401Kprevented it. They had known about it all along, had approval & everything. A friend of mine was applying at the same time, had withina few hundred dollars identical financials including 401k except I hadan extra kid. She got approved but had a different case worker.Debi>> we did all ours on the phone so not sure how they could just pickand choose, we had ALOT of documentation we flooded them with, andNOTHING for assets, I think that helped>

I think it varies state to state. I've had some here tell me there isno way we should have been turned down. But I also think some don'trealize that there are limitations. It's almost like (in my state)since they got approved everyone should get approved. In our state itis income-based period. In other states it may not be, which leads tothe confusion because we don't know how each of the other 49 differfrom our own. Seems like they did ask about our vehicles. But my van has 190,000,husband's truck is teetering on 300,000. Maybe they were so old theyweren't considered. Debi

You need to find out which state this person is in before you give out that information because these policies greatly differ from state to state. You are very Absolute about SSI with your responses but that's just in your situation. Not to be confrontational but i.e. everything that you mentioned in your previous comment is not how it works in my state.

Parents who put in the hard work seem to have a hard time while those that don't seem to have it easy. I see it everyday at my daughter's school; I say it today at the SSI and Medicaid office.

They didn't ask for my income with the Beckett, they asked for it with SSI. SSI is a federal program. Income levels vary according to the number of people in the household. If you were applying for yourself, then the worker was right. A person can make $800 a month and still receive SSI.

Let me clarify, when I said SSI, I was referring to the program for people who haven't earned enough credits to get Social Security Disability.

Your family income matters when it comes to whether your child will receive SSI or, if they do, how much.

I know because I've been looking into it alot lately. My ex is retiring from the military in a few months, and I get 50% of his retirement, so our income is going up.

What I was told was there is a certain income ceiling depending on family size. Once you reach that ceiling, every dollar thereafter is deducted from the child's SSI at the rate of .50 cents on the dollar. So, if we make $400 over the limit, my son's SSI will be reduced by $200.

There's also all kinds of different income guidelines, which means not all income counts as income. For example, my adult son with autism also gets SSI. On paper he pays us $200 a month rent, but Social Security does not count this as income for me. So, as you can see, the rules are pretty screwy and hard to figure out, which is why I'm still kind of in the dark as to whether my retirement income is going to screw us regarding my younger son's SSI, or not.
