Guest guest
dear tired mommato, thank you so much to this link to janet's video. i'm listening right now. i sure wish she had an easier alternative to the american desicated hormone. she said they changed the formula to armour and not the one from canada called ertha is the orginal formula. anyway, i'm crashing again yesterday and today, and i have no idea what's going on. i tried on last 2 visits to get my doc to order the desicated instead of the synthroid. now i don't know if i should go ahead with that or figure out how to get the one from canada. i'm almost to sick to continue researching, but i have an appt tomorrow. thanks again to this valuable link. lois > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try. Guest guest
Hi Lois, Sorry to hear that you are doing so badly! Here is a link to an article that explains why sometimes synthetic levothyroxine causes pain. http://arthritis.150m.com/racemicEN.html To read more go to the left side and start with " experiences " and continue on. According to this French researcher, the synthetic chemicals in the T4-only pill (made by Merck) does NOT act like a hormone. Although our blood test will show we have an increased level of levothyroxine, it is actually NOT the exact same that our body would natually make and can use. Synthetic T4 rises our T4 levels but the consquence is arthritis-type pain. This is exactly what happened to me. Some of us do, in fact, tolerate T4-only drugs well, but the rest of us it makes us FEEL much WORSE. If your dr will NOT Rx NDT, ask for the T4 that has no fillers called Tirosint - it consists only of T4, glycerin, gelatin, and water. Also, there is a NDT made in the USA without fillers, only contains olive oil, made by Acella - called NP Thyroid. Good luck! I hope this helps, ~Bj > > > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try. Guest guest
I am perplexed. There have been many studies done with either D-thyroxine or DL-thyroxine (i.e. racemic mixture). In none of the papers I have read/dipped into is there any mention of the the sorts of issues that site reports. I am perfectly willing to believe that there are issues with some or all levothyroxine products, but not yet that the problem lies in the D/L issues. I guess (and it is no better than that) the issue might be to do with impurities, breakdown products, etc. Or the impact of levothyroxine (and everything in the tablets) on gut flora. Guest guest
thank you for the link BJ. i will read it now. i wanted to let you know that the problem janet mentioned with the armour, was not the fillers. she said the pharmaceutical company changed the formula so that now, the hormones or amounts of hormones were altered. she said the one from canada was pure original unchanged pig hormone containing all 5 hormones. she said the name of that one is ERTHA. have you heard of it? i just got back from doc and he won't order ndt until he gets the T4 up to the amount that i need not to be fatiguied. i explained to him that i have studied that T 4 will not work for hashis but the ndh will work. he still wants to try it his way so i backed down again. he raised my synthroid from 75mcgs to 100 mcgs and wants to see me again in 2 weeks, when he will raise it again to 125 mcgs. i'm still taking cytomel 2.5 mcgs which he refuses to increase. he said it may take a year to regulate me but that i may feel better by end of summer. (he didn't say what year tho. lol) thanks for your help. much appreciated. lois > > > > > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try. Guest guest
hi again BJ, (continuation to my response to your response) i think my original post was not clear coz i was feeling so badly. it is not pain that i have. it is extreme fatigue. i feel totally depleted and it's difficult to stay out of bed for more than a few minutes. i tried to access that link you sent, but it opens to a page that shows a selection of different languages. i clicked on english, but nothing happened and i don't see anywhere else to procede. thanks again for your help . lois > > > > > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try. Guest guest
Hi Lois, The name of the author of the STTM book and website is Janie Bowthorpe. There is some decent information however, the website and book of the same name are very biased towards NDT treatment and contains inaccurate information although I share some of her philosophy and bad experiences. Forrest Pharm, the maker of Armour Thyroid did NOT change any hormones in its formula. Forest changed the inactive ingredients of Armour in 2008/2009. Many people had bad problems with the reformulation, me included. I have heard it works better if you chew it up and then swallow it. The FDA regulates the amount of hormones in each grain so they can NOT be changed without approval. Parke- (Warner-Lambert) sold the USA portion of Armour to Forest Pharmaceuticals in the mid 1990s, who changed the inactive ingredients in 1996/1997 and again in 2008/2009. IMHO, Forest is NOT a consumer friendly company. The Canadian desiccated thyroid is called Thyroid, which is made by a pharmaceutical company named Erfa Canada. It is NOT the same original formula. Erfa changed the amount of hormone contents after they bought it from Pfizer (formerly Parke-) in 2005; the inactive ingredients were NOT changed. Pfizer took-over Parke- in the early 2000s. Parke- owned Armour thyroid in both the USA and Canada. Erfa has slightly less T3 and T4 compared to desiccated thyroid in the USA. In the USA, all have the exact same amount of T3 and T4 per grain as regulated by the FDA. I have been taking Erfa Thyroid since Aug of 2009. I also take compounded slow-released T3. Lois, if you keep feeling badly you may need to seek out a different doctor. Hope this helps, ~Bj > > > > > > > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try. Guest guest
Hi Lois, I had extreme fatigue that turned into severe pain while taking synthetic T4 drugs. I tried most of them and all made me feel awful. They caused me to become crippled and finally bedridden. I was Dx'd with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. As for the article, you may not be able to understand what the article says with your severe fatigue. In a nut shell, the guy or gal had arthritis and was taking l-thyroxine aka T4, which s/he believed caused worse problems. The same thing happened to me. Guest guest
Hi Lois, I am so glad you are feeling better! My story is that the per-2009 Armour worked very well for me. When it was reformulated my free T3/T4 dumped very severely below range. At that time my only choice was Erfa Thyroid from Canada as there was a shortage in the USA and I had already bought up all the local Nature-Throid (another brand of desiccated thyroid). I also took a desiccated supplements made by Nutri-Meds. I continue to buy and take Erfa Thyroid because it works for me but I do pay-out-of-pocket for it plus postage. If you do NOT want to have to pay for it, I suggest you try NP Thyroid made by Acella (no fillers, dyes or binders - only contains olive oil). One drawback is that NP Thyroid only comes in three sizes: .5 (half) grain, one grain and 1.5 (one and a half) grains tablets. http://npthyroid.com/ If I ever decide to switch back to USA natural thyroid, this is the first NDT I will try. Also there is Nature-Throid made by RLC Labs, which is a hypoallergenic formula, the inactive ingredients does not contain any artificial colors or flavors, corn, peanut, rice, gluten, soy, yeast, egg or fish/shellfish. It has the largest variety of dosage sizes available. The inactive ingredients are: Colloidal Silicon Dioxide, Dicalcium Phosphate, Lactose Monohydrate* (*Present in traceable amount as part of Thyroid USP (diluent)), Magnesium Stearate, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Croscarmellose Sodium, Stearic Acid, Opadry II 85F19316 Clear. http://www.nature-throid.com/ Armour Thyroid is made by Forest Laboratories, and the inactive ingredients are calcium stearate, dextrose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate and opadry white. http://www.frx.com/ Generic desiccated thyroid makers/distributors for Forest are: Ranch, PD-Rx Pharmaceuticals, Rebel Distributors Corp, and Physicians Total Care. Guest guest
BJ,My compounding pharmacy actually compound the dose I need. They made 75 MG and that was not enough and then they tried 85 MG and that was too much and so it took the pharmacist a while, but he said he figured out the formula for 82 MG and that's what I've been on now for the past year, so I think some compounding pharmacies can make the exact dose you need. And they bill my insurance. I'ts just called "C Thyroid" for compounded thyroid. I did just have a blood test today to see how my blood is doing. Just wanted to pipe in that you may not be stuck to grains or half grains. However, I have no idea what fillers they put in...hmmmm.... To: Thyroiditis From: beckyjov@...Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2012 23:03:44 +0000Subject: Re: Stop the Thyroid Madness interview tonight Hi Lois, I am so glad you are feeling better! Hope this helps, ~Bj > > > > > > > > > > > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try. Guest guest
thank you again BJ. your knowledge continues to amaze me. i have copied all of your info for my doc. next week he will increase my synthroid to 125 mcgs. hopefully i will feel even better. i'm not back to normal. still sluggish but able to keep up with some daily activities. from what i read, it seems that switching over from synthetic to natural thyroid is not going to be so easy. since i don't have a choice there, i'll have to hope that he knows the protocol for switching over. i so appreciate you taking the time to explain and share your experience with me. lois > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try. Guest guest
Hi , You are right that most CPs (compounding pharmacies) can make the exact dose needed of thyroid hormones. However, in my case, I do very well on the NDT, Erfa Thyroid, from Canada. A CP cannot duplicate an already made and marketed drug, which would be cause for a fine or worse, to be closed down. In addition to that, I need natural desiccated thyroid hormones not synthetic ones. My CP makes me natural compounded T3 thyroid extract from Thyroid USP powder for my extra T3 need. Be cautious, as a CP can make bio-identical thyroid hormones in their lab, which is not the same as natural but synthetically made like Synthroid or Cytomel. I had one CP tell me it was plant-based and natural. So you may be told it is natural when it is NOT. 'Bio-identical' and 'natural' are NOT the same when it comes to thyroid hormones. Most people think that bio-identical hormones are plant derived like progesterone, estrogen etc. The sex hormones are steroid hormones unlike thyroid hormones, which are peptide hormones. Thyroid hormones can't be derived from plants. Synthetic hormone is actually `bio-identical' to what a human thyroid makes, but it is not *natural thyroid hormones* as in desiccated thyroid. It is generated in a lab by synthesizing L-Tyrosine and amino acids into T3 and T4, or a T3/T4 combo, which is actually synthetic like the active ingredient in both Cytomel and Synthroid but without the fillers, binders, dyes etc. Even so, the bio-identical compounded thyroid may agree well with some patients. The drawback it is missing iodine, calcitonin, T1, T2, etc that NDT contains. I requested no sugar or sweeteners in my compounded SLT3; it comes with organic extra-virgin olive oil. I encourage you to find out what the filler is as well. Best wishes, ~Bj > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I am not sure if the following link will work, but I will try.
