<<All my joints make cracking or popping noise when I exercise.

What does this mean?>>

Hi Pris,

My doctor told me that this is air that gets in the joints and it's nothing

to worry about. I would still check with your doctor as this may be

something totally different from what I have.

Happy New Year!

I can't say for you, but it means my inflammation is up when it

happens to me. I was on abx for several years ending in 7/02 due to

side effects. The abx eliminated the cracking noises. They returned a

few weeks after stopping the abx, went away after a course of

prednisone, and then returned. I have the noise in my ankles.

<<One theory is that the ligaments (tethers that hold the bones together)

make these noises as they get tight rapidly when the joint is moving. In some

instances, popping may be due to a tendon snapping over or around the joint.

Another theory is that nitrogen bubbles in the fluid inside the joint are

rapidly brought into or out of solution when the joint is manipulated, such

as cracking the knuckles in the hand. These noises with movement of a joint,

particularly the knee, may sound like folding stiff paper, and are called

" crepitus " . These noises are increased frequently after surgery on a joint,

although the exact reason is not clear.>>

<<Why do joints make popping and cracking noises?

Joints can make different noises--some are serious and some are not. Some

people learn how to " pop their knuckles. " By pushing or pulling a joint in a

certain way, an air bubble can suddenly appear in the joint with a " pop. "

Once the bubble is there the joint cannot be popped again until the air has

been reabsorbed. Some joints crack as the ligaments and tendons that pass over

them slide past bumps on the bones. Individuals who " crack their neck " make

noise in this way.Other joints lock up intermittently--often with a loud

pop--because something gets caught in between the joint surfaces. A torn

cartilage in the knee or a loose piece of bone or cartilage in the joint can

do this. Once a joint is stuck in this way, it may need to be wiggled around

to unlock it. This may also cause a pop. Finally, joints that are arthritic

may crack and grind. These noises usually occur each time the joint is moved.

This noise is due to the roughness of the joint surface due to loss of the

smooth cartilage.>>

http://www.orthop.washington.edu/arthritis/general/faq/01

<<A joint is partially made of fluid allowing the joint to remain lubricated,

similar to the oil in a car. When a chiropractor performs an adjustment,

patients will often hear a noise. The noise is simply the release of gas

similar to the noise heard when opening a can of pop.>>

Most of the articles l looked up said pretty much the same thing as the

above. I personally have had several different types of crackling and popping

type noises. If I move my feet, knees, ankles, after being at rest for a

time...and I put weight, walk, move around, etc. I get popping noises, but no

pain associated. Other times I get the ligament (like a rubber band crossing

over bone, actually my pelvic bone...weird feeling. I had this for several

months after an operation on the abdominal ligaments and muscles. I hear the

noise, but it would be hard for another person to hear it. It was almost a

snapping sound. Then there is another type that I have had...bone scraping on

bone (hip joint/shoulder joint) that is painful and the sound is like someone

scratching on a blackboard. We have talked about this phenomenon many years

ago and " Our Dr. Bill " told us it was very common and we shouldn't worry

unless it is giving us pain. His notes are probably in RISG archives

somewhere. Best regards, Connie (granny)

I don't know the medical explanation but I have developed the same

thing. My experience over the last year has been that joint noise

and cracking and grinding precedes a flare of inflammation. Both

knees and hips and ankles got noisy over about 6 months, then I had a

severe flare of inflammation in knees, hips, and ankles. Now my

elbows and shoulders are cracking, which I think means they will get

inflamed next. I hope I'm wrong. Does anybody know the medical

explanation? Has anyone else found noise to be a predictor of a

future flare of inflammation?

Adriennes doctor explained the joint noise/popping one time. However, I

don't recall what the explaination is. I will try to catch up with Adrienne

and see if she remembers. ( she probably does, as she remembers everything)

I certainly hope it isn't a predictor... Adrienne has become very noisy in

her back and neck. I thought I was sitting next to the bigger than life Rice

Crispy Guy..with that Snap Crackle and Pop she was doing the other night.

inflammation? "

Yes! My shoulder and shoulder blade popped quite a bit before and since it has

become just about the worst case of inflammation I've ever experienced. It also

happens the same way with my left knee which is also the most damaged joint I

now possess.

Yes, this is the definition as well as the one about the ligaments and

tendons, that the MD told Adrienne years ago. ( and that I could not

remember)

Thank you!!!

You are all so awesome with the information you are willing and able to

share. It is greatly appreciated by me!

Thanks again

Thanks, Ray. So I'm not crazy. Doctors don't seem to understand dramatic

increase or new joint noise as a warning sign. I guess we patients will

have to educate them.

Hi Connie,

Thanks for this information! I want to thank you for taking your time doing

the research you do for the group. You're an asset to the list!

This is pretty much what my doctor told me as the reason for my 'popping'

and 'cracking.' He said that in my situation it isn't serious. As for me,

I've never noticed a flare after this happens, although I'm in a flare

pretty much all the time! Unfortunately, I'm in pain 24/7 and don't really

notice much, unless it's severely different.

Again, Connie, thanks for research...I know it will help ALL of us!

Adrienne sounds just like me! When I get to popping, I'm like the Rice

Crispie Men, too!!!

Hope Adrienne and you are doing well. It's good to see you posting!

Take care!

I am a 47 year old female and I have a ceramic-on-ceramic hip joint. My first surgery was in September 2003; I had a revision in March 2004 because the cup dislocated. For the past 3-4 weeks I hear a sort of high pitched noise--like that of a squeaky wheel--when I walk. Sometimes I hear it with every step for three or four steps then I don't hear it for the next few. But I find it to be very embarassing when I'm walking through a very quiet area. There is no pain--just the embarassing squeak. My doctor has run tests and taken x-rays and there is nothing physically wrong with me and the replacement looks perfect.I would love to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience. Did the noise get worse over time? Did it go away after some time had passed? Is there anything that can be done to eliminate

the noise? Help!

Hi Everyone: I was wondering if any of you here have had their

joints

make a " snapping " noise when you use them. Shoulders, knees, wrists

etc. I have days when all my joints make a snapping noise when I use

them. There is no pain involved, just the noise. Do any of you have

that problem and know if it is a symptom of toxicity or something else?

Thank you in advance. Diane

One of the symptoms of mold exposure for me is extreme joint

pain..sometimes I will be doing fine and suddenly

something will pop and I will be in extreme pain and can barely walk..

(I keep a pair of crutches around for those times)

I then have to stay in bed until I can walk.. I usually also get

constipated at those times..

a bunch of things happen, my GI tract usually just freezes up.

Does this sound familiar for people?
