The latest development in the controversy came Tuesday when Industrial Realty Group filed a lawsuit contending that DreamWorks and insurance giant International Risk Group refused to cover $300,000 in legal expenses that the company had incurred. Several workers sued Downey Studios in 2006, contending that they were sickened by exposure to toxic materials, including asbestos and mold, while building props for the set of the 2005 science-fiction thriller. The studio, located in southeast Downey near Imperial Highway and Lakewood Boulevard, was once the site of a Boeing Co. plant. The Los Angeles County Superior Court lawsuit alleges that DreamWorks, Greenwich Insurance Co. and International Risk Group failed to honor agreements to indemnify Industrial Realty Group against such claims. Downey Studios executives previously have dismissed the workers' complaints as spurious, citing extensive environmental testing that concluded that the former aerospace manufacturing facility was a " healthy and safe environment. " Representatives of neither Industrial Realty Group nor DreamWorks would comment on the suit. A spokesman for Greenwich Insurance could not be reached for comment. Once the hub of America's space race, where Apollo spacecraft and space shuttles were assembled, the sprawling complex has been transformed in recent years into a film production center, hosting such movies as " Santa Clause 3 " and " Van Helsing. " Southern California-based Industrial Realty Group acquired the property in 2004. richard.verrier@... ----------- More info has been added to this huge tangled web of corruption. *see below and also @ http://downey.kaiserpapers.info This is why the ACOEM and others do what they do, and IMO it really won't make any difference who enters the white house! http://listserv.fsl.com/pipermail/wtcrc/2006-September/000352.html http://www.knbc.com/news/9595345/detail.html The same developers from Playa Vista were also used at this very contaminated site. The so called Tricks of the trade are very well known. So much for CA's Prop. 65 we were NEVER told this land was highly contaminated. A person who works for an Environmental Co. that did an Environmental Impact Report, stated (off the record ofcourse)), he was shocked anyone had built anything on that property! One instance on record tho is...NASA claimed all transformers to be dry, but this particular Environmental Co. found just the opposite to be true, with all transformers to be leaking PCB's. The Ground was contaminated with TCE, PCE, Arsenic among many other chemicals. NASA said they had 80% of the land cleaned up (80% of?) Then they report they had underestimated the level of contamination and the cost...oops! ARCADIS who was invloved also in the " deal of this property " also has written reports on TCE to try and lower the toxicology limits and undermine the EPA's Reports. This might be why Mr. of the EPA was so evasive during Mr. Waxmans questioning...hmmmm California water will be a cocktail mixture of Flouride and PCE! Oh Yummy. Finalization of that assessment has been held up after repeated objections from military contractors and the Department of Defense. Finally it was reviewed by the National Academies, which issued their report in July 2006, finding that the data linking TCE with cancer was even stronger than EPA IRIS staff had determined, and recommending that the IRIS assessment be finalized as soon as possible. Nonetheless, the Defense Department continued to insist that it not be finalized until more data was available, and today the assessment has still not been finalized. The City of Downey has built a Childrens Park on this land and plans of Vertical Housing are now in the works. Kaiser Permanente built their New Regional Medical Center on this Former NASA Boing SUPERFUND site. They built a 4 Floor Medical Offices and relocated my Department, with ongoing construction and remediation directly at the back of our workspace. Each time the back door was opened Co-workers and I became ill with severe sleepiness and dizzy spells and many other symptoms. After I became ill and was no longer able to work, I then found out, many others that had worked on this property had also become ill. I was deemed by the State of CA to be found disabled, After my Kaiser M.D. said I was ok to return to work.
